Another update from me - you can tell I'm off work sick with all of these updates  {-)

So I've been planking between the stern mouldings and then getting on with the nailing

And now at last we have a stern that looks solid  :-))

Finally I made and fitted the decorative moulding that covers the 1st beam on the quarter deck

My next job is to make the gratings - I'm just waiting on the guy who made the drawings I'm working from to confirm that I have read them correctly.

Cheers all - Mark  :-))

Hello Mark, that moulding appears to be blended in very nicely indeed - nice work mate :-)

Always following on Mark...........

Some excellent profile images, too often we forget the graceful underwater lines of the hull [toward the stern] created by those Master Shipwrights all those years ago.....[without modern day drafting aids & CAD]

Hi Guys

Thanks for the really nice comments  :-))

I've had the dimensions of the gratings confirmed so I'm going to have a bash at them over the next couple of days.  They are going to be tricky at 1/24 scale but lets see how they turn out

Another update from me - Gratings - oh my how tricky are these things  %%

Ok - first stage loads of milling.  This would have been easier if I would have had a 2.3mm end mill but I didn't.  So it was 2 cuts with a 2mm cutter which I did have  {-)

This allowed me to cut the gratings and the laths ready for assembly.  I assembled them on a simple jig just to try and keep them as square as possible.

However nothing is quite as easy as it seems - The gratings do not sit on top of the beams.  The carlings have bevels cut into them so that the gratings sit within the beams.  This picture explains it a lot better.

So I recessed the carlings - I also discovered that I had set the 4th beam about 2mm too far forward so I had to cut into that as well.

Next was to cut the top curves into the gratings and the matching bevels to meet the carlings

The final stages were to drill and fit the 252 nails required for the gratings and then get them fitted.

So next I'm going to have a go at making the rudder - it looks tricky so should be interesting

Cheers Mark

Hey Mark

Just been catching up on the build.  Beautiful work as always, amazing detail.  And that slipway looks to be rock solid and serving you well, well worth the investment I reckon.

Very best regards
David.

Hi Lads

Thanks for the nice comments  :-))   Most of this ship is now pretty much built.  Once the rudder is on I've only got the finer details to get it done.

I'm not masting or rigging it as thats a skill of is own and I also wouldn't have room to fit it in my home  {-)

The slipway is great but it will come into its own when I start my next ship.  It should make raising the frames a whole lot easier.

Hi All

The rudder  :-)   This was a lot harder to make than I thought it would be!  Its made of 2 pretty substantial pieces of wood

The problem I had to solve was the cutting sequence due to the rudder being tapered in 2 dimensions.  So firstly I cut as much as I possibly could whilst the timber was still square.

Next I glued the 2 pieces together and got on with what I can only describe as some pretty sketchy work on the mill.  The work holding was a bit dodgy to say the least but pictures say these things better than words.

After some cleaning up the finished rudder turned out OK

I can't do much else on the rudder at the moment as I'm waiting on a delivery of brass and silver solder so that I can make the pintles  :-))

Cheers Mark

It always amazes me how relatively small the rudders were on such very large ships. They obviously worked though. Another beautiful piece of woodworking Mark.

Hi Brian - I've already got my next build lined up.  Its a bit bigger than this ship and probably twice as difficult  %%

Hi Footski - I'm with you on this!  They always seem to look so small I can only guess that they used the sails to assist it?

That's an impressive piece of work on the rudder.

Thanks Steve - I've made a bit of a start on the pintles.  As always these jobs throw up more questions than answers

The rudders were more of a trim tab at times, much of the steering was done by trimming the sails. The rudders were more effective than those on modern ships as there was no propeller opening. This meant a smoother water flow over the rudder. When steam engines began to be fitted to the sailing ships they were known to be much poorer at steering due to the prop opening, one reason many were fitted with lifting propellers was due to the disruption of the water flow over the rudder when they were down.

Hi All

Moving forward with the rudder; I looked at the drawings again and realised that I had not cut a rebate for the pintles.  So it was back to the mill to sort that out - it would have been so much easier to do when the stock was square  {-)

The pintles are made from a 1.55mm solid rod for the pin and 1mm x 2.3mm brass strip for the straps.  I made a jig that allowed me to silver solder the straps to the pins.

It took 3 attempts to get the relationship between the pin and straps correct but I got there in the end

Next was to bend them into shape and drill the fixing holes in the parts and the rudder.  I also made the fitting that fits to the rear of the rudder that holds the rudder chains.

Finally all of the parts were chemically blackened and fitted with a small amount of epoxy resin

So far so good - my next job is to make the other half of the hinges (gudgeons) and get the whole thing fitted to the ship.

Cheers Mark

I am really getting fed up of using superlatives to describe your work, but "I ain't got no choice!"

Footski honestly mate I'm trying my best and what you don't see is all of the bits that go in the bin  :embarrassed:

It's another piece of craftsmanship - great work Mark :-))

Regards,

Ray.

Thanks Ray hope you're ok fella?

So I tried to load these pics last week but Mayhem was down - which is a great opportunity for me to say that we all need to donate to keep this lovely forum going  O0

I won't go into loads of words but I've started the gudgeons which I thought would be easy but as per usual I was proven wrong.  However with just a rough fit the rudder is going ok  :-))

I silver solder these parts as I did the pintles

The 3 gudgeons

The monograph says that the gudgeons must be recessed into the stern post so I had to cut 3 slots

Very very roughly fitted just to see how they look but not yet finished by a long way

I won't lie - when the rudder fitted I was well chuffed

A view of the rudder from the poop deck

There is so much still to do such as reducing the gap between the rudder and stern post and getting the gudgeons to fit properly - but we are on our way.

Thanks so much for all of you comments

More done  :-))

Firstly the gudgeons were recessed further into the stern post and small pads were made for fitting them on the un-planked side.  These are not my best work to be honest but I've learnt a lot.  If I was building this ship again I would have cut the recesses at the same time that I made the stern post.  It would have been so much easier but thats for my next ship  :-)

A full ship picture with the rudder fitted

Next was to make the tiller arm which is a very prominent part on the ship so it had to be as accurate as possible

I also straightened up the metal banding around the rudder to make it look better

I think my next steps will be the construction of the main hatches and the pumps

Cheers all - Mark

Don't know how you managed to get the bends in the tiller to exactly match the drawing Mark but very, very impressive - well done mate. :-))
