 I have been toying with thoughts of a replacement for my Unimat SL with saw attachment. It has served me well but has limitations in regard to functionality and accuracy in long cuts and although it still works well I feel it must be getting close to blue smoke moment considering the abuse I have given it.
  A search of the web brings up much of a collection all of Chinese origin which seem to have the quality of something that you would get from a xmas cracker gift.(stop fence with pressed metal wing nuts etc).The only alternatives so far seem to be the Proxxon FET , I was  getting hot to trot with this but some of the reviews are critical of the fence adjustment which moves when you tighten it and poor dust extraction. (suggestions this problem is on recent machines and different manufacturer). This of course only leaves the Byrnes machine,  the RR of saws which every modeller drools over , now if only there was an english stockist and distributor you could buy from so you did not get screwed by US postal and import charges.
  Is there any source I have not happened on ? I am surprised that there is not any specialist manufacturer in Germany or Switzerland.

When it's possable, go over to the US and get one and make a holiday of it while your there. If we ever get a trade deal with the US we might not have to pay to much tax on it when arrive back here.


Just thinking allowed don't 'yer know.

Yeah. Got caught out on this a few weeks back. Ordered a mini bender for brass work and got charged another £21 which I had to pay at Post Office. Import tax/Postal Handling?? Not quite sure as I thought goods under £135 were exempt. Need to follow this up a bit more.

No Import Duty for goods under £135 but they are liable to Import VAT at the UK rate if their value is >£15. On top of that you'll pay the PO Handling Charges.  https://personal.help.royalmail.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/143/~/ive-received-a-grey-fee-to-pay-card

Hi Baldrick - I've got a Byrnes saw not because I'm rich I just saved for ages to get it.  I'm not joking when I say that I thought that I bought it its own private first class seat on the plane as the postage costs from the USA as very high.  Then of course you have to pay the customs charge on the cost of the machine and also the postage too.


So the question is - is it worth the money?  No its not - I cannot justify the money I paid for this machine and yet I've upgraded mine since that time at considerable cost to me.  There is no way I'll ever get my monies worth out of this machine and I knew this before I bought it.


However - I have been in engineering in one way or another most of my life.  This saw is probably the most accurate and lovely machine I have ever owned.  It makes life so easy and is extremely accurate.  I've saved a lot of money ripping my own planks and wood and its such a nice thing to own.  Not only that the back up from Jim Byrnes is great as he's a boat builder too.


It makes tearing wood a complete pleasure and I know that the wood will not be a problem.  I have found that my sources of great wood have expanded and I get to choose the wood that I really want.


My saw is currently sitting in customs at Stanstead waiting for delivery back to me as I've upgraded mine to an 18" table.  It's not justifiable in cost but I can't wait to get it back.  I cannot think of another tool that I have ever owned that I can say the same of - I hope this helps.

Hi Mark.
 Twas afraid that it might be said as you just have . I have a love of fine tools, even if I could have achieved my purpose with something more prosaic. I know that I will never be able to justify the purchase of the Byrnes on any logical ground but feel that any lesser animal would be a constant source of disappointment and regret.
 At present I have the wife at a disadvantage as she has just busted the en suite bog seat so I will press my advantage home and go for a home run.

Good luck with using a busted bog seat to lever an advantage! I suppose there is an element of justification needed sometimes but the way I look at it is if you can afford it then go for it. It's for your hobby and part of the justification is your enjoyment which goes beyond just monetary value.

When I was working some colleagues (usually the fairer sex) would ask why I needed more than one motorbike? I just used to say if I need to explain you don't get it!

Baldrick, buy it! I don't know what it costs but, the pleasure of using the right tool for the job outweighs the cost. How much would the cost of playing golf cost. Clubs membership etc? I will bodge for a one off but if its goig to get used I will buy best. Get it and enjoy.

Hi Baldrick


If you do decide to go for a Bynes saw drop me a PM as the expense is not so much the saw but the cost of getting it to the UK is similar. So its best to order it, and all of the extras that you want all at the same time and I can help you decide what it is you need as there is quite a few.  That way the whole lot can be sent in one go and it saves going back and having to pay the postage again.  This is what I did and I'm glad that I did too!


I also agree with Grumpy Dave (great forum name!) in the fact that we only come this way once.  I tried for about 2 - 3 years to convince myself that buying one would be a great purchase and it would pay for itself in no time.  In the end I just gave up that argument and realised its just the best out there and I really wanted one.  It took me 2 years to save for it and I love it........I should have bought one sooner if the truth be known.


He doesn't advertise these - but he does supply them if you ask.  Here's mine with an 18" table - the standard ones are 12".  The cost difference when your buying from new is not that great.  Just passing on my experience of buying from Jim and Donna Byrnes who are just fantastic.  They've still not invoiced me for the 18" table but sent it anyway and thats real trust for you.

I repeat , buy it, it looks brilliant! Micrometer fence adjuster? Cool or what. No Safety or riving knife though?
PS Grumpy is our Grandaughters name for me not just what I am! I don't know how they got the photo of me though!

Ha ha excellent - Dave it does come with a safety cover for the blade but me being me I removed it. Your right about the riving knife though. It doesn’t need one as the fence is set with something like a .005” run out so the gap gets bigger as you run the timber through. I’ve never had a problem except ones that were self inflicted  %%
