1: 30 Guns Wanted
« on: June 15, 2021, 12:40:26 pm »

Hi all
I am looking for a 1:30 scale 4.5 inch naval gun and Gatling goalkeeper gun in kit form or ready made but I cannot find them. Any advice as to a source would be very welcome/
Thanks

You could always try Shapeways 3D printers if it has to be exactly 1/30 scale. Find a designer which already makes these items in another scale and request a rescale. I’ve done it in the past and they tend to be very cooperative in helping.

1:32 is a more commonly used scale, and there might be something available.  1:35 is a common military model scale, but even if bits were available, might look too small.
About the only 1:30 models that I recall are the original Scalextric, but even they went to 1:32.
Nowadays, 3D print shops have the ability to rescale their existing lines without massive retooling costs, but will still not be cheap.

I scratch built a 1/32nd 4.5 Mk8 mainly from balsa and plastic card about 20 years ago for a 4.5m long HMS Gloucester using the plan by Les Brown published in Marine Modelling back in 1988 and I am fairly certain he did a Goalkeeper plan as well.  There isn't exactly a ready market for 1/32 modern large warships so no injection moulded fittings kits are going to be available.  If scratch building is not your thing then the only option is going to be 3D printing or commissioning someone else.  I can thoroughly recommend Mark Hawkins at 3D Boats at Shapeways and I see he has a 1/72nd 4.5 Mk8 in the stealth configuration which I would expect could be scaled up but at 8 times the volume is likely to be rather expensive.

Your requirements suggest a Batch 3 Type 22 frigate which would work out at 4.9m long in 1/30th scale.  If so, I wish you the heartiest good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks for replies, I have asked Shapeways if they can rescale their 4.5 stealth gun to 1:30 or 1:32.
