Hold Heading Gyro...
« on: February 10, 2021, 03:01:39 pm »

Hi All

So I'm wondering whether anyone here has tried a helicopter 'Hold Heading' gyro on a boat..?  And if so, how did it go...?

My Aquarama is still in build so not been in the water yet, so not tested.  I have tried the gyro on the rudder servo and it does seem to want to correct when the hull 'direction' is changed.  The 'sensitivity' (gain) can be adjusted to control the amount of effect, and if sensitivity is set on a toggle switch the gyro can be enabled and disabled for normal use.

Reason for thinking about it is that I'm putting together a skier for my Aquarama, skier will 'slalom' side to side, so boat will be pulled off course by this action.  The 'slalom' motion is servo controlled, so I'm thinking:

1. Add the gyro 'enable' to the same switch as the 'slalom' servo, so when its disabled the boat behaves as normal. When enabled the skier 'slaloms', and the gyro keeps the boat in a straight line by actively controlling the rudders.
or
2. I add a mix to add an opposite force via the rudders to the one being exerted by the skier...

Or is this just lockdown madness setting in...??
Best regards
David.

I can't comment on the specific gyro but a friend of mine uses them in his hovercraft (sorry I don't have specific details) and they work extremely well even in strong winds he can steer a straight course!

I think it should work fine

Cheers
