london registered fishing boat
« on: February 07, 2021, 05:47:07 pm »

I realize that I am clutching at straws but maybe someone can help.

With latest boat now finished (Louise Heloise) and getting bored I started to reserch my mothers family. This turned up that my great grandfather owned a London registered fishing boat at Leigh on Sea in Essex in the early 1800s and may have been a Bawley or Shrimper.
I have the name and LO number but no idea who or where records could be found to give me more informtion as to the type and length of the boat which I would love to model for the family.
Thanks,
Dave.

As Taranis says, there is a lot of information online, much of it historical. You coud start with searching Leigh on Sea Fishing Boat Register for examplle. But if you have the number and name you might be able to get a direct hit.

Go direct to the current fishermen and ask if they have any contacts with a local museum or local historian , the register of fishing boats will be held at the National Maritime Museum I'd think ( although a lot of the smaller ports records were put into local libraries or museums , London did have a lot of boats on the register over the years but very few large boats so its 50/50 where the registers will be kept )

Bury St Edmunds DAVE  :-)
I have very good long term memory of converting the Midland bank there to HSBC with my soon to become local boozer just across the road The Nutshell smallest pub in Britain. Landlord was Roy from Sheffield and I became welcome in his house while I was there. Same year as Rumbelows went bankrupt just a couple of doors down from the bank. Long live Greene King  O0  Lay off the Abbot ale!!

Post up the boat name and number and we can all have a search  :-))

Thanks to everyone for the replies and suggestions.

To Tarranis, I have tried Google and when I can confirm which type of fishing boat it was I am sure there will be a lot of info there. As you say " long live Green King"

To Colin,  As soon as lockdown allows I will visit the Leigh museum as they do not appear to be online. The boat was Angler Reg.LO11 mastered by David Turnidge.

To Davie,  Will do as soon as possible.
I was a kid in the fifties learning to play crib in the Billet with my grandfather, George `Piley`Turnidge and  swimming of Bell Warf. I look forward to going back although I hear that the Old Town has changed a lot. Best wishes to the fishermans co-operative.

Just spotted this regarding Essex built smacks.

There could be a Bawley equivalent?
