"These are good learning points" - as that tedious brown-noser in the Training Dept at work used to say. Allow me to put a FLJ spin on it.....

"Charging the batteries" should be top of the check-list when the electronical bits start misbehaving, but you know that now   ("Na, na, na naaaaa na".)

Next one should be "switch it off; have a cuppa/fag/walk around the lake, then go back to it". These things are computers, and what do we do if they  start misbehaving? Yep - we reboot them.

Works for me just about every time. Say no more, squire.

If I were in the market for a new radio I'd go for the Futaba 2.4Gb set. I've several customers who opted for the Multiplex Cockpit set and have been disappointed by its very heavy model aircraft bias. Spektrum is reported to be heavy on Tx battery power, and Hitec don't seem to have come into the 21st century yet.

Suit yourself, matey - 'tis a free country.

We aren't doing Blackpool this year, but we'll see y'all at Warwick/Leamington/Fosseway.

I would say that switching off and leaving  a few minutes is the first step - same with a computer, much better than just re-booting. I'm sure our resident technical wizzards can tell us why, I just know after 40+ years working with the things - if it wont do what you want switch off and on again. I saved many an engineers disturbed night that way ::). Of course when we had valves a good kick was also useful :D

thanks barriew FLJ + Co  that was my first idea  switch off and have a break but after 2 hours  the thing did'nt work so thats why i left it on to go flat and then recharged it ,BTW the battery was fully charged when i went sailing .
Dave  regarding the 2.4gb sets they look ok apart from the battery  the run time looks a bit short as the radio sucks a fair bit of juice .
the other thing that puts me off is that i have six 40mhz recievers and if i go down the 2.4gb road then i have a few recievers to get for my boats
then again if i reduce the fleet i wont  ??? nah .
but back to the hitec ,working now  O0 might have a word with the amerang boys see if a reboot/reset switch on future sets.
pitty your not at Blackpool ,but not to worry will catch you at another show.

The Spektrum DX6 although draws 270mA of current this can be reduced by changing the voltage regulator in the back of the set. This gets the current down to an acceptable 120mA more than doubling the running time.

See http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2017.msg20689#msg20689 for more info.

thanks Terry ,i remember that conversion on here and with a higher capacity battery pack that would put it towards what a standard tx would last in endurance .
I have a 2700ma pack in mine and i get around 12 hours ish ,about five sessions on the pond from 1 charge  then it starts beeping at me ,that gives me another half hour if i continued but i and the lads are usualy fed up with the beeping >:( noise before then.
Like i say going on to 2.4gb would be costly as i would want to change the lot to run up there from 40mhz  :(.

Yes Daz,  I wasn't aware of that either until yesterday on another thread, although not having a submarine then it wont affect my models.

Ref Futaba 2.4Gb 6EX - disregard what I said earlier! I'm not too bothered about it not working underwater, but am I right in thinking that this set's 5th and 6th channels are only ON/OFF switches as opposed to "proper" proportional controls? Not exactly a lot of use for scale model boat applications, but we're back to "My ideal transmitter" again. I know it's easy enough to replace those daft switches with centre-bias ON/OFF/ON ones or rotary controls, but that's going to invalidate any current warranty so I'd want written permission (signed in blood) if I were to undertake it for any of my customers!
I still miss my RCS Guidance System............

you may shout to the hills about the f14 , a marvelous radio providing the modeller with an unlimited choice of controls .
theres one of the plus points, but the radio comes as a standard unit  and it;s like the car in the magazine for x£££ with the little note at the bottom saying model shown for illustration only ,the bells and whistles(switches /knobs) on the f14 are extra.
thats what i think .

Well am I glad to see a topic like this, maybe I should start another topic but thought I would post here first. I bought the Futaba 2.4 6 channel because I wanted to run several things on my boat, I mistakenly thought the switches would operate some of them (WRONG) so I thought OK I will buy some latching relays that will do the trick (WRONG AGAIN) they wont work off the switches either!!

OK so I’ll get the switches changed to centre-biased ones oh no you won’t man from RIPMAX says not possible!!
Well I am not one for giving up I’ll have them all working from the left hand joystick, fine got one to work but when I try to operate the secondary latching relay the first relay turns off! So I am advised to change the Exponential Rates or whatever they are called so not being one to shirk I got out the manual and away I go. Five hours later and a few choice words and nothing, the left hand stick won’t work the relays at all I can’t even hear the latching relay click where as before a messed about it was working. So any experts out there that can tell me what I’ve done wrong?

So here’s my question how do I make the left hand joystick work a multiple latching relay, and can I have channels five and six changed to centre biased ones that will the work relays? Or should I just give up and get anew radio set? I did see that Pandan Models do an add on to radio systems called a thing called a MCD - 8 way RC Switcher unit FUNCTION CONTROLLERS would this or something like it help me out?
I need a few stiff drinks now!!!

At this rate promotion up the sea ranks looks very unlikely!

If you are thinking of a new radio and don't like the F14 navy then go for a Futaba FX18
8 ch very easy to get up and running
4 prop' sliders
L/R joy sticks
switchers to operate mixers etc also very easy to install
2 sliders 2 switches come in the box

Well they did with mine
