Advice for a new model
« on: August 28, 2011, 09:25:20 pm »

I'm a beginner in RC model boating but I have built various plastic kits and wooden static models. I want to build an old tug and the Model Slipway assurance looks very appealing to me. Has anyone built it and is it a good kit? As im a novice can I ask about what electronics and radio gear are best for the kit?

Hi Sam.

Welcome to Modelboat Mayhem. Hope you're having a good time looking around the Blogs and things.

The popular consensus on 'Radio gear' is to start with a cheap reliable set up, as in the 2.4 gig range. A lot of members (including me) are buying the Planet 5 system which is receiver and transmitter for £49.  This will run your Model Slipway craft a treat. You can read all about any subject by using our Search box' facility, but a good place to start would be the Electrical section which covers these transmitters in detail.

Hope this helps.   :-))

I have built five Model Slipway kits though not the Assurance and they were really excellent.

Their instructions and drawings are clear and concise.

Jackie and Laurie are quick and eager to help if you do have any queries.

They have a web site which has all sorts of usefull information on kit building,[ glues and materials etc ]

They also sell the correct motors and brass props for your model.[check web site]

As my mate Ken said, the Planet 5 R/C system is excellent and cheap.

Any more questions give a shout.  :-))

Hi 110samec
I spent all day yesterday at Holyhead on the RNLI stand at the Old Gaffers Festival, the Holyhead Model Boat Club were nearby so I spent some time talking to the members.
They're a very friendly and informative lot and if you got in touch with the club I'm sure they will answer any questions you have and may even persuade you to join them!

Hi there Sam, welcome aboard Mayhem. I've built a couple of Model Slipway kits, good for beginners and more experienced builders. The Assurance class tug was subject of a build feature in Model Boats Magazine August & September 2010, this may be of some help to you. Dave.  :-))

Thanks for the advice everyone. Brian, if i think I'm right in that you were with the big Severn model, I gave you a quid! My dads on the boat so any loose change goes to them. I'll let all you know how i get on or not with the model.

Cheers, Sam
