Santa (SWMBO) gave me the Hornet for Christmas Ho what a surprise, well maybe not %)   anyway just about to start a nice leisurely build, I had a change of mind and thought about doing a custom paint job on the lexan body, but when I unwrapped it and saw the box art again I thought no I've got to do it like that so iconic of an era, I'll post a photo when done.

Probably not Martin, I've always preferred scale speed in models, boats as well as cars, so I'll stick to brushed motors and nimh batteries and I've still got a job to keep up with them :embarrassed:

Very perceptive Joe!   {-)

Haven't started the Unimog yet as I'm waiting for a set of JIS screwdrivers and a pair of sprue cutters.  Could have managed with what I've got but any excuse for new tools and there's always the off chance I might get another kit!

Tamiya have done a limited edition re-release of the Terra Scorcher.  It already comes with ball bearings and a speed controller with braking facility but I put the hi-torque motor upgrade in it and road wheels and tyres.

Nice rig there, I like the way you can customize them if you want to, wheels , bodies etc. although I like the Holiday Buggy I wasn't that keen on the wheels/tires so I've ordered a set of Carson wheels and all terrain tires, should be here this week, My only small grumble about Tamiya is the silver screws, I think black anodized screws would be less noticeable.

Whilst putting the Christmas decorations back into the loft I brought down my youngest son's RC car which must be about 20 years old, he's 31 now! It's a Nikko Jumping Car.

It's in very good condition and is complete except for the charger for some reason, even has the instruction booklet. The battery pack is Nicad - don't know if it's any good now but will try charging it with my balance battery charger.

I've got one of those Terra Scorchers!   ....   but mine is kept race ready, under a cosy dust covering!

The Carson all terrain wheels arrived, yeah quite pleased with them, may not feel the same when I'm picking all the mud out of them though.  %%

I bought a new wheel radio mainly because my old one had very limited telemetry, they claimed this one had full telemetry so as it was cheap as chips I thought I'd give it a try, It's actually far better then I was expecting, One of the reviews on it said the forward part of the trigger was a bit short and your finger tended to slip off, I kind of agreed with that so I did a little mod and it's fine now, one of the features I really did like was the receiver has a built in Gyro that that works really well in auto correcting the steering to help keep the car in a straight line, also good for drifting, I bought another three receivers and fitted them to all my cars.

Hi Joe

Buggy looks good, it's got the look of a Lotus/Caterham 7 about it.

Those Tx are good, I bought one for my race boats (without the gyro Rx's though!) and will use it for the Unimog, again without the gyro function!

I've found the trigger fine as I prefer to pull the trigger back to go forwards but can see from your photo how it could be a problem.

Hi Chris  yes I pull the trigger for forward also, but push for braking/reverse and found your finger could slip off easily the mod seems to work well,  I see what you mean about the Caterham my nephew has one it's his pride and joy and only comes out the garage at weekends and then only when it's dry.

Well that's the Hornet done, it's been a pleasant leisurely build with the added step of painting the lexan body, I love it when you peel off the protective film after spraying the inside to reveal a deep gloss finish, applying the decal set was the trickiest one yet a couple of places I could have done better but I'm happy with the overall effect, and she runs very well even with the querky Hornet rear suspension, I may get around to do a mod on it to stop a bit of the "clack" from the front end of the transmission when you open the throttle though this has no effect on performance it's a little annoying.

I know that most if not all of the cars posted aren't using the CC-01 chassis as used in my Unimog but where you are using steel ballrace bearings to replace the plastic kit ones are you finding they are a good fit?

I bought some Carson bearings and find that they are not a tight enough fit within the housings and around the shafts so that the ballrace is not doing it's job. The shaft is effectively turning in a steel bearing!

The plastic kit ones aren't a tight fit either but at least it's plastic bearing on steel.

Hi Chris
I had the same problem with my Beetle build I used a spot of cyno to glue the bearings in the housing.Just finished the Frog still got the sand scorcher and Suburo Brat to build.
Again enjoying building these again as built the originals in the 80s also can be built indors in the warm as the workshop is to cold.
I also built the Dancing rider trike which was a lot of fun and something different.
Regards

Hi Joe;

Your Hornet looks very well done ,so neatly,so decently that I suppose you may possibly hesitate get it to run on off-road operation.. :-)) :-)) O0 {-) %% Especially decals were stunningly applied with no wrinkles and bubbles. :-)) :-))
I think you had better normally ,mainly put it in a living room to be able to see everyday so as to avoid some damage on it by the operation. {-) %)

Hi Chris  I get the Tamiya bearings and they have always fitted perfectly even in my CC01 chassis and they were a nice tight fit in the Carson wheels that I changed on my Holiday Buggy so maybe the Carson ones have a differing tolerance.

Kijo Thanks for the kind comments my cars usually run round my back garden on grass so they don't get too dirty  :-))

Hi Derek - had thought about glue but was hesitating in case I wanted to get them out again. Also unless they are a friction fit on the shaft the ballrace won't turn. You have a good range of cars there, I can see myself getting one or two more even though I wanted to stick with boats.

Hi Joe - I was going to get Tamiya ones but I couldn't find any for the CC-01. Carson were stocked alongside Tamiya bearings at the supplier I was buying stuff from so I thought they would be good quality. I know what size bearings I want now and some of the bearing kits for other chassis have what is needed so I will probably go with one of those. If none give the fit that I want I will fit the plastic ones! I have the upgraded steering parts anyway with their own bearings.

This is a good solution:

There is also a high strength version, Loctite 603, but you shouldn't need that.

That would do it , though I've not had a problem with bearings not fitting, I would prefer Tamiya to include the ball bearings in the kits they probably don't to keep costs down but it's such a popular upgrade I think folks would still buy them.

I did a mod on the battery cover as I did on the Grasshopper, as most of you guys probably know the Grasshopper and the Hornet have a problem with the battery cover dropping off when the car is on rough ground but can happen any time resulting in the battery being dragged along under the car, this is due to the catch on the corner of the cover, you can get a 3D printed upgrade cover kit but I just use a small servo arm fixed using an existing screw to hold the catch closed.

Thanks Bunkerbarge. I'll get the Tamiya bearings first but if required I'll get some of that.

Good solution Joe.
