Hello all- First post on this forum!! Greg, but you can call me MO!

I have been only in the boat world for a short while ( since about February) but decided to get into the modestly deep end of the pool- I love live steam!! I have amassed about  5 boats so far - most old Bowman and Modeen boat. I am not a pro modeler at all - nor scale stuff is so far beyond my ability- so no one shoot me if my terminology is shoddy or too uniformed- I am a definite newbie.

In addition to steam I have also just bought a Seaport Workboat( Dickie) for steamer recovery purposes!! It looks as id many members have these cheap little hulls and kit bashing them is some what of a pass time. It should be fun to learn more about R/C etc- Some on my steamers have basic R/C and some are "set the tiller" and let fly!! They will be happy to see a tug around when needed!!

I am in a boat club here in Portland Oregon( USA) and I also hang out on line with the steam bunch at the Un-Official Mamod steam forums. There is a pretty good boat presence there as well.

These are a couple of shots of my little projects. This first one is a Pre war German "former" clockwork boat.. now destined to steam with a Mamod boiler and a Stuart turner single oscillator!!

a little tug that I am building

A pre-war Bowman Snipe I restored

and an old home built hull that I am converting to steam-she is about 36" long

Some very nice models there Mo, welcome to the forum.  I find steam to be a very rewarding area of the hobby and although a bit more involvement is required on the pond side the sight of seeing your own steamer going across the pond is well worth it.

Don't be scared of scale, work up to it slowly and you'll find that you can put something together relatively easily that also makes a nice scale model.  Start with something like an open launch to get you into it.

Meanwhile enjoy your current models, I'm sure they are great fun.

Thanks- I do not know exactly yet how the power plant will work out...It has not been run...I am getting close, I just need to glue in the stuffing tube and attach the rear support and install the rudder and shaft. The rest is cosmetic after that. The little double acting  Stuart will hopefully not out-pace my boiler capacity!! I had a very long narrow bow on the boat to contend with so I needed a very small boiler ( the  Mamod boiler is about 4.25" long. )to match up with the engine. I had about 8 " of total space to allow for firebox /boiler and engine and coupler. The fore area of the boiler will just allow a meths burner to be inserted... Oh yeah, you asked about the prop, I am using the original bronze prop.. the three blade that is pictured. I do not know pitch etc... a little dumb in that area- ...

There will also be a raised but removable canopy over the open electronics area. Single channel for rudder servo only. With only forward  being the option on three of my steam boats- the need for a retrieval tug is pretty real!

I do not know protocal here- so I may start a thread documenting them a little as opposed to throwing them in here...Thanks for the welcome and comments..It is kind of lonely in the life steam boat world being here in the Pacific Northwest US.... Always nice to have more company!!

Glad to have you aboard there is a plethora of information and help when ever you call (or in my case sheepishly squeak)

Thanks R,

I didn't know if there was an official place to introduce- but steam is my main squeeze.... so I thought I would start here... I am such a newcomer to this hobby that my work is very elementary- but I am having fun !!
