vic smeed drawing
« on: October 29, 2007, 05:10:31 pm »

I have just found an old Vic Smeed drawing for a BPC Torpedo Boat which I am considering building. There is one item in the materials building list (paxolin) which I do not recognize nor can I find a description of. Has anyone heard of this or is there a modern day equivilent.

Hi there,

Paxolin is a phenolic paper laminate offering good mechanical and electrical properties in low voltage applications.

Available from stock in 6mm thickness for general purpose use, other sizes are available to order.
Manufactured in accordance with IEC 893.  If you have a look at the link below

http://www.etscc.co.uk/jkcm/plugins/ProductsInCategory.aspx?cat=3940

When you see what it is, no doubt you will be able to find a good substitute for it, (whereabouts is it used on the model), if you explain where it is used, perhaps we can help come up with an alternative.

1960s transistor radios used it so did rc equipment  for circuit boards some old electronic equip up to the late 80s had it , they now use fiberglass sheet but maplins do sell a type of it with Photo resist on , but its not very good.

If the paxolin was being used for its electrical properties, maplin do copper clad fibreglass sheet intended for use in making printed circuits.  You could always lay up your own using a fibreglass kit - you can then decide your own size, shape and thickness.

Hi    i made quite a few vic smeed designs in the 60's and most times paxolin was the preferred medium for engine mounts .you dont say where it is being used but if it is engine mount other materials are suitable..........

The other thing he might have called it up for was also on the Thornycroft MTB,,- torpedo tubes

Thanks for the info. I forgot to mention that it was to be used for the torpedo tubes. Saying that I will probably use pvc tubing if I decide to build. My late buddy used  cigar tubes but they are not available in the length required unless I make a side trip to Cuba.  O0 ::)

hi there,

For torpedo tubes, I tend to use, the chrome plated tube that is used inside of wardrobes etc., i.e. the rail that you hang your clothes on - it is approx 18 mm diameter.  I purchased mine from the local B&Q store.  Not too expensive.  8)

Hope this is of some help.

hi  djrobbo

it's amazing what a bit of grey paint can do to chrome  :D  this is my model of The British Powerboat 488  O0

I was too lazy to lift her down from the shelf, and that my friends is laziness - because I knew I would have to clean the dust off it.
