That simple bit of creative engineering made a great marking tool.

Might just have to permanently log that in memory for potential future use.  :-))

Well, while waiting for the paint to harden, I was attempting to shape the bulwarks with a heat gun and oh dear (or words to that effect) they twisted and basically fell apart. <:(

Right then says I, lets move on to plan B...

First of all I suddenly realised that, while putting the carcase together, I had committed the no.1 sin - I hadn't waterproofed the flippin' thing on the inside !!! >:-o

At the same time I thought well, rather than make another attempt at the bulwarks, why not incorporate them into new skins for the hull...by that I mean - rub down the hull (yet again) and apply some thin ply 'on top' of the existing sides.

Hopefully that will work...

Meanwhile I still needed to get the inside of the boat waterproofed!

That would be no big deal except for the Bow area which was totally sealed up during the build.
Also, the lovely paint job on the deck would have to be lightly rubbed down and feathered in, otherwise there would be an obvious line 4mm in from the deck edges, which I had left in primer only.

Anyway, the deck was rubbed down first....

Cheers Scott! it was just a bit of luck that the 2 pencils, taped together like that, measured exactly the 4mm required. O0

Actually, all the running gear was removed from the boat (again) so that the resin could be applied to all compartments. The Bow area needed to be cut into... :((

But I digress...the next stage was to once again rub down the hull sides...

This was followed by cutting into the bow on both sides to get resin coating sorted...

Again, a few photos.... :embarrassed:

...that Bow on shot makes it look like a pair of massive anchor housings... {-) {-) {-)

Next came the application of resin to the other compartments and left to harden overnight....

....and so the resin was also sloshed around in the Bows of the boat and, once hardened, a frame was made for each hole, to accept the patches, after which filler was applied and sanded back...

....and so, to bring this up to date...the hull was given a good clean up and panel wiped, taped up for the deck re-spray and 3 more coats of Ford Riviera Blue (Halfords paint) applied.

Ref the masking, I found the stuff at Wilko, with the sheets attached, at £4.50 a roll :-))

Here's the final photos - enjoy...

So here we are once again...

A start was made on the new skins on 26th Jan 23 (noted the date because I knew it would be some time before I could get back at it)
The skins were about 80% done on 21st Mar 23 but still required filler to close off where bows 'almost' came together. That was 5th Apr 23 and I was still finding more areas on the hull requiring filling and sanding!

Next visit to the shed was 2nd June 23
At that time all I got done was the 1st coat of varnish to the underside of the hatch/access covers - the 2nd coat didn't go on until 2nd Oct 23 and the 3rd coat was applied  on 12th Oct 23.

There was still a small amount of filling required on the peak of the hull so I made up a fine sawdust and pva mix which was applied to the effected area. By now we were into late Nov 23 and the bow final sanding took place on 28th.

Finally, on the 29th Dec 23 the hull was cleaned up and wiped down with panel wipe.

This photo was taken while the bow was still being sorted out...

The latest attempt to make the shell 'plates'...This time using Printer paper and each sheet was marked out in pencil and given 2 coats of PVA/Water mix at 5 parts water to 1 part pva.
Now we're up to the 20th Feb 24 and the vertical plates were applied to the hull. The horizontal plates were only completed and dried completely 11th Apr pending decent weather for spraying.

...and finally for now...

Managed to spray 2 coats of Halfords Grey Primer late on Friday afternoon.
Boat now set aside for paint to harden off.

2 more photos...

Aye, cheers David, part of my problem with this build is going my own way when choosing material - should have used the same as Glynn G.
Trouble is, I'm hopeless with balsa.

Anyway, thank you for the feedback - very much appreciated. :-)

Cheers,
Ray.

Typed up a bit of an update, along with a few pics but the reply hasn't taken - guess I'm just a bit out of touch with the system.

I'll try again tomorrow

Over the last few weeks I've finally managed to get some paint on the hull...and lettering applied.
Sprayed 2 coats of varnish and left it to harden off.

I really should have double checked before applying the varnish - the Port side letters were about 6mm lower than the Stbd side.

So, lettering removed, found build-up of varnish was left behind and therefore had to be rubbed down then masked up for respray to that area.

Well, that worked ok - I'll put more up later - the elastic band was set up to make sure both Port & Stbd lettering were aligned correctly.

New lettering applied.

Got a bit of overspray still to deal with so that's the next task for the coming week.

Some more photos attached - the problem I had initially was forgetting to reduce image sizes.

Cheers,

Ray.

With the overspray sorted attention turns once again to the deck.
So, the hull was once again masked off for spraying...hatches removed for the 2nd coat :embarrassed:

We then waited 25 - 30 minutes and removed the masking...all ok.

Bulwarks will be tackled after deck hardens off.

Just 2 more pictures...and that's all up to date now.

Cheers,

Ray.

Was Blyth the original name or the home port?

Hi Steve, it's representing the home Port. On previous builds I've arched the words 'Port of' over the town name Blyth but on this one I just couldn't get it right so just opted to go with BLYTH only.

Cheers,
