Hello everyone,
I am a new member to this site, and to give members some background I am posting this to get started.


About 1975 I assisted my father in the build of what I believe to be a Veron Huntsman 28.


This information is from my distant memory, and from research I have carried out, believe this is correct.
The boat was built from a kit and measures 42", and is the single screw version.
It was powered by what I recall to be a large and heavy electric motor.
My father was an electrical engineer, and ran his own business, part of which involved him designing complex switchgear for large machine tools used in the manufacture of large Perkins diesel marine engines amongst others.
The boat was powered by 2x lead acid 6v batteries, which were also heavy and made for poor performance on the water.
After some use, the boat was put away, and not used for many years.
My father died in 2001, and I have had the boat in a state of disrepair, minus motor, batteries and remote control system, hanging in my garage since then.
Other projects and interests have taken precedence, namely riding and restoring motorcycles in recent years.
I am now looking to restore said boat, and am looking for some advice on what motor, and other control gear would be suitable, olong with suggestions of suitable batteries, and a radio control system.
I am also interested in hearing which suppliers would be useful, and able to supply said items.
Any advice from others with a similar model would also be gratefully received.

Hi Peter


A new 2.4G radio for starters.
Depends if you are going brush or brushless motor ???
Brushless a 50mm 500/700kv will turn up a good speed with a 50/60mm prop.


Lipo batteries work well with either motor type.


A good balance charger with a safety bag recommended.
Also a battery alarm with battery voltage read out.


If you use a car ESC (speed controller) with reverse water cooling is really required.

Hi Peter and fellow motorcyclist.

As Harry says brushless motors tend to be the choice nowadays for planing boats. You could probably go down on the motor dia. say to 42mm but again I'd probably go for a 50mm as the model is quite heavy and would benefit from a torquey motor.

Options are an Overlander 5045 720kV (from Overlander Batteries) or Leopard 5055 650kV (From The Component Shop). Running from 4s LiPos to give 14.8 volts to give sufficient revs/performance.

Both these motors require a min. of an 80amp ESC and I'd use a HobbyWing Seaking V3 120A - you don't have to use the water cooling. I use these and the cheaper HobbyWing Quicrun car ESC but the 120amp one only takes 1-3S LiPos. I get mine from Wheelspin Models.

I'm building a 1:12 scale, 28" Huntsman 28 and used the Veron kit drawings as a starting point.

Thank you for the reply.
Glad to hear we also have motorcycles in common, as well as model boats.
Your suggestions are most helpful, and I will now be able to start planning what I need and where to get it.
I had concluded brushless for the motor, but having no experience or knowledge of any of the modern components available was a bitblost when I looked at some of the suppliers websites.
Thanks to the response so far I have a better idea now.
I will post some ipdatws when I make some further progress.  The boat itself is undergoing some repair work and a colour change, so will add some photos in due course too.

It can start to add up expensivewise when you are having to buy radio gear (transmitter and receivers), batteries and a charger, as well as what is actually needed in the boat, but as with other things it's a good idea to buy good quality and those mentioned are somewhere in the middle. There is cheaper but it can be unreliable, especially components like the ESC.

For charging LiPos it's prudent to buy a smart charger (for safety and accurate charging and monitoring). Overlander Batteries do suitable ones and they also do batteries (surprisingly!) as does The Component Shop. Turnigy also do good batteries, as well as chargers ( I have one but they don't seem to do the equivalent mains one now) as well as motors etc.

You will need a motor mount and motor to prop shaft coupling as well which we can advise on. Is the existing prop shaft and tube and the rudder assembly in good condition?


Will be interested to see how it progresses.

Thank you for your further information and advice.
I am thinking brushless motor as suggested, and Lipo batteries etc.
The radio control system I will also look into, and as you, am of the opinion that cheap is not the best way to go, so am prepared to spend a reasonable amount if money on this.
I want it to be reliable and usable once finished.
There is the original plastic prop, and prob shaft, which i think is probably an imperial sizing, possibly BA.
I am now going to investigate the purchase of these items, and get started in the rest of the restoration.
