Id some models please
« on: September 03, 2022, 11:50:05 am »

I'm pretty sure this is a kit-built model, but which one?  I have looked through many old copies of Model Boat, Model Maker etc. No luck yet

Thanks John

That looks like the Mr Tom kit from slec UK. It should be 406 mm long if it is.

Hi,
I wondered the same until I googled some pics on-line.  I don't know what it is but it's got some lines looking a bit Fairey-esque to me.  I don't think it's a Mr Tom and it looks a little longer -even if the top has been adapted the hull doesn't look quite right unless it's perspective?  I'm prepared to be proven wrong though.

Hi Fellas, I did look at the Mr Tom, but it isn't one of them. Funny thing is I picked up another one the same a few years back!  I have looked through just about every copy of Model Boats and Model maker but no help at all. So maybe a foreign import? I will post on an American site as well see if any of them have an idea.

Not really Rich, it's more like a day boat on the Norfolk Broads.

hi there,

Looking in an 'old' Plans Mag and I have come across this one 'Sweet 16' and I see Sarik Hobbies still have the plans listed.  See what you think.

One of your boats looks very much to me to be part of the Aerokits family?
Sea Urchin?

Curved Transom on cabin cruiser and split windscreen are the killers.

That one is really stumping us! When I first saw it I thought it rang a bell and would be easy enough to find but despite extensive searching no luck.

Others are similar in some respects but not the same and I was wondering if the builder had modified the design and the roof looks a lash up. But you say you've had one before, was it exactly the same or just similar?

If the same it must have been quite common but being elusive.

Hi Fellas, Its stumping me also! Funny thing is I have picked up another one! It's not a Aero kits Sea Nymph, I already have one of those. I have looked inside, but no clue there no part numbers i can see. It's not a sweet Sixteen either, I believe they were a plan. These are definitely kit built. I have this morning looked through a few old French Model Boat mags, but I don't think they are old enough. I would say these are 1960s ish

Where are you picking them up from!

So have you got three now? At least they all look pretty much the same, especially the side windows and cockpit coamings.

Hello, I only have two, at the moment! but I do have several other models waiting (mainly cabin cruisers) for their turn to shine again. :-)  I just love the older style wooden cabin cruiser types of models. My interest is just restoring them back to a nice usable condition. Sometimes I do even take them to a lake and sail them. This is a little difficult as it means a longish car journey to suitable place to sail, and then of course probably having to join a club and so on. I picked up the latest models from a lovely chap that found it too hard to use the models he had, old age restricting his model boat time :(( . His family sadly had no interest at all in the models, so he put them up for sale. Others I have picked up from online auctions and local junk type auctions. I have just recently found myself with more time on my hands so hopefully should be able to get out in the workshop and play a little more often. Going out in the workshop is my " Happy place"
Thanks for everyone's help so far :-))

On the photo with the three models, the larger one at the back appears to be an early model from an unfinished Maycraft kit (possibly a Mercury).
With that in mind they could all be from that range which were sold around the late 50's early 60's... quite expensive kits at the time but very good quality with assembly on par with modern Aerokits.

I acquired one about 10 years ago and fully refurbished it along with the very old Basset-Lowke motor wired up in the hull ( this had a lovely tick to it when turning over which was amplified through the large hull and sounded most realistic.). Not exactly a speedster but it just pootled around the lake very sedately.  Sadly and ,on reflection, much to my regret I sold  it.

On the Model Boats forum Harry/Canabus has suggested it was a Sea Vixen. I Googled it and it took me to an old thread on MB asking the same question (the photo shows one exactly the same) and Dave Milbourn said that it might be a Modav Sea Vixen so that strengthens the case. Dave used to work for Modav but production of the Sea Vixen had stopped by then.

I know Dave designed the Fairey Huntsman 31 kit but other than that I can find nothing on Modav or Model Avionics.

Yeah, almost there Phil. Harry has a drawing amongst his collection and once he's woken up and emailed it to me I'll post it up.
