Anton Sapphire
« on: August 29, 2022, 12:17:12 am »

Hi,
I have just acquired a MHB Topaz with and Anton Sapphire oscillator, in which the cylinders are held to the frame by O-rings. Anybody able to tell me the O-ring size and/or where to get them?

Welcome Marty.......the MHB Topaz with and Anton Sapphire oscillator, is a great vessel & steam plant.....you will be happy with your purchase

I purchased an Anton gas regulator many years ago from Anton, not sure if he [Fabtrice] is still in production, but he sponsors the Anton annual French model steam boat race

We have a few Members from France who hopefully will chime in & assist

O-rings can be measured with a vernier caliper, however the o-rings from your engine will be stretched and set as oval shaped due to the years of tension. If you know of any hydraulic components service centre, they could take a sample, place it on a tapered o-ring 'yellow Parker witches hat' gauge & determine what size it would have been

Nitrile o-rings are ok to 95 degrees C, and compatible with steam and steam oil, Viton elastomer is ok to 180 degrees C and also ok with steam and steam oil........I am guessing, the original o-rings would have been Nitrile & preferably, 90 Duro [durometer hardness]...either way, both are cheap as chips

Thanks Derek,

I am in Camp Hill, Brisbane! I have a few projects on the go using Miniature Steam Avon units mainly - Vic Smeed River Queen and a twin setup in a Saito Neptune. Had my doubts regarding the Sapphire in the Topaz and am considering a Miniature Steam Clyde unit in lieu. In my stash is the Topaz, a Caldercraft Talacre coaster and another freelance hull from a guy here in Brisbane that does the River Queen hull in fiberglass.

The Topaz was an unexpected buy - appeared on Facebook for $400 NIB with the power plant so couldn't resist. Given a new price in the region of 1200 - 1400 in 2006 money I think I did okay!

Bonjour,

Marty, Fabrice ANTON Bretagne is a friend and I ask him your question as I have not this machine in my collection.

400 is nothing, I paid  more than 3 times this price for mine : https://youtu.be/q0d-8mhsnUY but equipped with an Anton T200 and I added accessories.

Very pleasant on the water : https://youtu.be/b-93Ju1vV6E

Unfortunately, Fabrice has retired last year and we have now in France only one pro manufacturer : https://www.jmc-vapeur.fr/

Thanks Raphael,

I certainly would like you to get in touch with Fabrice and also ask are there any guides or manuals for the engine. I did manage to find a catalogue from 2007 but unfortunately it does not list the O-rings.

Bonjour Marty,

I have already sent a message to Fabrice, he is on holidays yet and will answer us as soon he come back home.

About guides or manuals, he has never published any document and I am sure you won't need one to repair your machine  ok2
