I don't think so David I haven't heard anything but I could be wrong, Jim worked on his own and I think it would be hard to pull it all together as a business.

The staunchions were made from brass split pins pressed into special jigs. I seem to recall reading that the jigs have been lost.

To be honest there are plenty of decent stanchions available, spoilt for choice really I would say.

Nemesis has corrected my comment that they were made from brass split pins. They are actually made from half round brass wire as a closer inspection of some I have confirms.

I agree there are planty of stanchions around these days but at typically 60p upwards each they are an expensive purchase. I can't recall what the James Lane ones cost but they were much cheaper.

As far as James Lane is concerned, the story I have been told is James' sister/relation 'hired someone to clear his house' and everything was put in a skip.  Tools etc., and also he had a massive garden railway which apparently has gone as well.  Sad, but I will try and have this confirmed by the jungle telegraph.   He is a sad miss.


Have you thought of photo etched stanchions - try Scale Link fretcetera.... I have some of theirs to try myself - they are at 1:48 scale - they do seem to be a little bit flimsy though - the other thing is John Hayes he used to do some beautiful etched stuff and his stanchions were a lot thicker that he produced than Scale Link's.   Good idea to contact John to see if he can help you out/point you in the right direction.

Look up Great Little Ships stanchions for the 1/72 Flower kits. I've just checked on the Hannants site and a pack of 24 cast metal ones comes in at about a fiver. I have just found out that James' models and tools went through an Auction house - to whom we don't know - and whilst I wouldn't hold my breath, they may come back on the scene, who knows.

Thanks for finding this info out John. I imagine Mr Lane was at least a model engineer and/or a resourceful chap as well.


I hope the tools included his system for making them as what I saw looked quite tidy and strong.


I went with J.R. Haynes etched ones and ones available from Deans (they came with the M15 kit so its daft to not use perfectly good stanchions for when I am at that stage with her.)

James Lane's original role was a professional model maker for the shipyards.    he used to produce models for the ship owners such as P & O etc. - the ones in glass cases we see nowadays.


I one time had a good conversation with him on the phone.    His garden railway was, I think, his true love.   Where all of his models & that went - who knows - hopefully someone appreciates and is enjoying them.
