ESC Failing at Full Ahead
« on: November 02, 2007, 04:52:03 pm »

First of all I must own to being an Aeromodeller really, with a general interest in all things mechanical.
This being the case at the BMFA Nationals this year I purchased a 30"model of the 80' Elco PT Boat, quite reasonably constructed in balsa etc  but with a lousy paint job.
I have now stripped it, resprayed  and reinstalled the gear.  It has 27meg Hitec radio, Mtroniks 550 motor and RC Line 15A Sea Rover ESC all powered by 6off 3300 Nimh cells.
Following tests in the bath I ventured to the local pond where all went well for the first 20 minutes then much to the consternation of the local Duck Squadron the motor stuck on full ahead I then careered round and round for approx 15 minutes waiting for the battery to flatten.  When slow enough I managed to pluck it out of the brick lined pond and rush to the car (screwdriver) to remove the superstructure and disconect the battery.
Since arriving home I have recharged the battery and again repeated the test in the bath, sure enough the problem repeated.
If I disconnect the battery and reconnect everything lines up again OK.

Appologies for this long winded mail but can anybody help.  Is it just a cream crackered ESC?
I also have a 1M yatch , much simpler.

If this is the motor well just read the max amps to draws

540 size Johnson motor
This 540 sized Johnson high speed motor is ideal for marine use. Unit comes complete with motor suppresion capacitors.
Dimensions : L57.0mm, D36.0mm, Shaft diameter 3.0mm
Voltage, 12V
Off load current, 1.18A
Max current, 54A
RPM, 16500RPM

Code: Vision Std.500 12V

If this is the motor well it simply means you have cream crackered your esc,why not get one for that motor from Mtronics

To get over a half hour from a 3300mAH battery, the motor was pulling about 6 amps.  It does sound like the ESC is broken.

I have the Mtronics vision 600 in two of my boats with the Overlander speed controller 50 forward 20 reverse. Works well for me and A Model World are doing a good price on them at the moment @ £ 28.50
No hassle just plug in and go, no setting up.

Many thanks for the help,  probably explains why the boat was for sale.
Looks as though I will take the FSL's advice and buy an overlander ESC as I have used them for batteries for years.
I might be getting the boating bug again, (just cleaned the yatch after its trip on Lake Thun)  any reccomendations for a Warship Kit/ Semi kit that will fit into the back of a small car ??  Not looking for a Pyramid type project  just winter months.

Revell Corvette, the new Italeri PT Boat, there are a few E-Boats (properly S-Boats) available or imminent.  Of course, a lot depends on the type of car.
