Atlantic 21 - outboard motors steering configuration
« on: October 30, 2022, 07:01:30 pm »

Hello,
I have recently got myself an Atlantic 21 kit from Sievers Modellbau in Germany (http://www.modellbau-sievers.de/Baukaesten%20Uebersicht/Baukaesten/Atlantic%2021.html).
Unfortunately, the instructions are not very clear and the plans don't show how the steering system for the twin outboard motors is supposed to work. The instructions speak of pulleys, but there is a sketch with only one servo, and I can't figure out how to do this with two outboard engines. Does anyone know this or have any suggestions how to do this?
I'm thinking of sticking two Aeronaut Aqua-Race 60 engines on the back, but I'm loath to fork out the money for two of these before haveing figured out how that will actually work.Any help much appreciated.

You can control two rudders with one servo usisng a 90 degree angled rudder arm. The attached sketch gives the basic idea.HTH

lb .................welcome to MEM......as a first thought, pen an e-mail back to Sievers explaining your quandary.....[many suppliers are helpful]

Failing this, one of our MBM members may be able to assist.......

Hi
I used a flexible cable to one of the outboards, and a hard link to the other.

Have a look at a twin outboard RIB,

That's all right, Mr Ryan. My Morse is so rusty, I could be sending him dimensions on Playmate of the Month.

Thank you all!

@ dougal99:
That's something I had thought about, yet the configuration of the boat makes this a little difficult, since the servo ideally should be fitted quite centrally, in the console, so it could be tricky to reach out to the outside of the outboard engine. But I'll play with this and see if I can work that.

@ Derek:
Yes, that email is already being prepared. However, I thought I'd delve into this forum's "swarm intelligence" and see whether someone might already have encountered the same problem and solved it. But I'll go both ways now...
@ Fred:
I'm not sure I understand the "flexible cable" mechanism you're suggesting. Would you have a photo or a link to a twin outboard rib photo/build description with such a system (I couldn't find one).

Again, your kindly supplying these hints and suggestions is much appreciated.

This set up is slightlymore complex (and I haven't tried it) but the geometry works.

Another thought, based on the second configuration. Both rudders fitted with angled arms but connected via pulleys to the servo by nylon cord. (Again not been tried here!)

Have a look at these. Pic 28 shows the two motors connected with a rod and the end of the cable is just under the right (port) motor.
May be helpful %)

The way this was done on the Lesro Atlantic 21 kit was a servo under the console with a double horn on it. It then had two flexible cables one on each end that go to the inside of the outboards. This way as one cable pushes the one outboard the other pulls and they both turn in the same direction.

Thank you all, once more.
I do remember the steering configuration on the actual Atlantic 21 quite well from decades ago when I was crewing on one, but that seems difficult to scale-down to the model.
Howver, I find the Lesro set-up most instructive. If I can get enough lever on the outboards this way, I may try this. You've been most kind with all your suggestions. Lots of ideas to try out.

It may take a while, though, before I will be able to post my own photos, given my current work commitments. But I'll try to show you my progress later.
