scales close enough?
« on: November 04, 2007, 12:38:47 am »

Please advise me if 1:72 scale is close enough to 1:75 scale to be noticeable? I'm going to purchase a tug kit soon, and 1:75 scale accesories seem scarce, yet there seems to be an abundance of 1:72 parts available.

hi noticed it my self, i think its to do with hornby oo trains and airfix plastic kits being at 1:72 As for getting away  it. well people you can have a man in 72nd is 5foot 4" and at 75th he may be 5foot 10" ,tell me how high you average crew man is? as for fitting you don't tent to notice to much i am using 1:87 trucks on my 1:100 ferry as that all i could find thats good. If you were going for museum standard you have to look and see if looks right you might even get away with it. Good luck

Unfortunately only you can decide for yourself whether it is acceptable or not.

For a museum quality model that is going to be judged you may well find that the differrence is noticed and you will be marked down for it.  For a model built for your own satisfaction and pleasure it would probably not make much of a differrence and I very much doubt whether anyone else would notice.

It certainly wouldn't bother me but be aware of the differrences of the common scales around this size when looking for accessories.

I think 1/75th would be acceptable as would be "OO" scale, which is actually 1/76th but don't make the common mistake of thinking that "HO" scale is the same as that is actually 1/87th scale.  As a comparison a foot in each scale is as follows:

1/72nd   4.233mm
1/75th   4.064mm
1/76th   4.011mm
1/87th   3.503mm

hi all - with regard to scale.    To be honest with you, I dont think you would notice much difference between 1:72 and 1:76.  Ive included a picture of the Destroyer I am building in 1:72 scale - and you will notice there are two figures standing on the deck, along with other items.    The small brown figure is the 00 scale (approximately 1:76)  and the taller figure is 1:72 scale.   You will see some white fittings (these are Sirmar fittings for 1:96 scale) and there is a set of water-tight doors amongst these so you can compare them with the 1:72 scale bulk head door on the model (next to the ladder going to the bridge).  There is also a 1:96 Carley float and this will give you some idea of various scales.

Hope this is of some help.

A picture is worth a thousand words, John.

Very good comparison shot.

Methinks you're seeing shadows where none of any consequence exist
if you do the arithmetic  there's very little difference between the two scales unless you're planning on exhibition standard or are offering a  professional service where scale fidelity is paramount.

At the end of the day only you are likely to be aware that your crew's scale is minutely adrift from that of your model  - unless of course some Clever Dick, tooled up with laser measuring devises and/or divine guidances   takes issue  with you. In  these instances, the self appointed 'expert' is far more lkely to challenge the scale fidelity of much more than a painted deck-hand, so what are you worrying about!!,

Go for it O0

PS How is the word 'expert' derived?
The name is derived from two other words...... 'ex' is a 'has been' and 'spurt' is  'a drip under pressure'.

That's right, if you think about it, any group of people like a ship's crew are going to range in height between about 5' 6" and well over six feet, so unless every man on deck is either a shortar5e or a giant, who's going to be able to say that you're wrong?

We spend hours/months/years in my case building scale boats & ships fitted with scale fittings, figures and scale props. But I have yet to find a boating lake with 1/48 scale water in it !!!!  :(

Thanks for all the reply's shipmates...now I'm off to shop for buckets, swabs, trash cans, and bits, and I'm even going to call the LHS and see if he can get me some 1:75 scale water! I wonder if when he finds it, if he'll require me to take it home in in a 1:1 scale bucket, or if I'll have to make :75 trips! LOL

Captain Jack,

This subject of "Scales"came up on another Forum years ago, raised by the maker of a Static Model of a 17th century ship at a very small scale.
The builder was agonising about the diameter of the rigging ropes, the length of the Cannon barrels ect, you name it, everything had to be absolutely exact !!.

Eventually the Model was finished, a photo was posted to the Forum, I spotted that he had left something off the model, I posted, pointing out the omission and he went berserk !!!.
He had left off the ONLY items which could be seen on the real ship from a distance of about 10 miles, THE SAILS !!!!!.

A very heated exchange of postings followed as you can imagine, I nearly got banned for pointing it out !.
If you have a look at static models of old ships, quite a lot of them have not got any sails, furled or otherwise.
Most of them have bare Masts and Spars, all the rigging, but no sails, which to me, is a model of a brand new ship, in the Shipyard, still being fitted out.

But beware, dont start an argument about it on a Forum !!!.

John.  ;)  ;)  ;)

If you fill a 1:75 scale bucket with water, you then have 1:75 scale water.
Cheers, John

Hi all never really thought about it until I read these posts and then I started looking at photos of models with crews, Which AL seem to have been created in the ideal world size 9 shoe 34 waist & medium tops, perhaps they should AL have blond hair as well. {-) {-) {-) O0

I have a few of George Turners to put on my fishing boat.  I just hope my painting will do justice to the sculpture.  This range seems to have rather more people shaped people than most.
