Problem with remote switch.
« on: December 01, 2022, 08:36:05 am »

Hi, I have hit a problem with my remote switch. I have connected the switch to an available channel on the receiver. I have connected up the 12v battery to the switch and the led lights. However if I have the motor running etc and switch on the lights the motor stops running, so does all the other servos, rudder etc. if I switch off the lights all starts to work again. The leds are the 12v type with build in resistors. The remote switch is just one off Amazon with not much detail of spec, but rated at 3 amps. The receiver gets its power from a magnetic switch. Anyone have any ideas what is going on. And how can I fix it. Thanks

Could you provide a basic diagram or photo of the setup? The remote switch you mention, is this relay or solid state? Do you have a link to the item you bought? What is the purpose of the magnetic switch powering the receiver?

Try changing one thing at a time and see what changes;
Try connecting you LEDS directly without the switch and see if everything else still works
connect the remote switch but disconnect the LEDs and see if the motor still runs
bypass the magnetic switch etc

You may already have but its good practice to have a fuse, I once fried an ESC due to an absent minded half a second while troubleshooting  :embarrassed:

As a quick check disconnect the LEDs from the switch then see if the radio works when the switch is activated. If it still doesn't work then the switch is faulty in some way and needs replaced. If the radio works OK then there is some problem with the wiring to the LEDs. Where does the receiver get its power from? You mention a magnetic switch , does this contain a BEC and get its power from the 12V battery?.If so there may be some form of feedback in the circuitry if they have common earths. Try powering the receiver with a separate 4.8 NiMh pack and see if the problem continues.

It sounds like your basic radio and power set-up is working properly, ie, te magnet switch is work, the radio, ESC, motor and servos.It sounds like only when you put the switch into the radio circuit and put power to the switch with a load attached to it, that problems arise.
Do you have a wiring diagram for the switch which shows how power and load should be wired to it? Some switches are designed to interrupt power to the load while the load is connected to ground. Others are designed to interrupt the ground circuit. I does make a difference if the switch shares the ground circuit.
Worst comes to worst, Action Electronics @ the Component Shop makes some excellent switches. They include good directions for wiring too.
