For me it's got to be the Rover SD1  and I had nine of them including this one which lay neglected for almost seventeen years until I got my hands on it.

Nothing 'Loomed up' behind you like a SD1 !

That cop car is just sixty odd miles along the road from me and that photo has the Grampian Transport Museum at Alford.    I tried to post a photo of mine but failed miserably.

Mine was a T5 in the blue/green mix, hence its nickname of "Grue". Brilliant tank until the abs/traction control computer packed up. Then it was about £2500 for the replacement part but only about 1/2hr to fit it at UK dealer. Luckily a friend of a friend used to supply Ferodo braking systems to Volvo Racing in Sweden. Ended up doing a deal for a new lounge carpet and about 75% discount from Sweden.  %)

I must admit I've never seen this "evolution" of The Beast! In my day when it was around Kingston on Thames pubs it had a different overcoat BUT it was rather impressive noisewise!

Disclaimer - This attachment is not my car!

My car doesn't look this good - YET!!  But my car is the same make, model and color... with a couple of exceptions.
My car does NOT have the 289  cubic inch V8, it's still got the itty-bitty 170 cubic inch I6.  My car does on the other hand have the 5 speed and power brakes out of a '78 280Z.

My Falcon was my daily driver for many years, in Iowa winters too.  Consequently it has been hit in the nose on both sides.  It was put in storage when my wife and I went back to school in the 80's and hasn't been driven since.  One of my first retirement projects will be to get my Falcon looking like this again, I'm retiring in September of '24.

Hi Don, Firstly you'll need to get your Spitfire engine %%
The Mechanics
  • Merlin 27,000cc V12 engine
  • Custom ‘step up’ GM Turbo 400 three-speed auto
  • Austin Westminster steering
  • Bespoke rear suspension
  • Currie heavy duty rear axle
The Beast gets its name not only from its Brobdingnagian proportions, but also from the huge Merlin V12 that powers it. In the case of The Beast, the engine is naturally aspirated, not supercharged, and is speculated to produce approx. 750bhp. When it comes to the specs, there is a lot ‘estimated’. It’s never been on a rolling road, for example. However, the ‘stock’ engine with a supercharger could deliver 1,500bhp, so 750 doesn’t seem far-fetched. And, in 1973, the RAC verified a top speed run of 183mph, so it’s no slouch. When The Beast was featured in evo magazine, John boldly claimed 950bhp with an earth-turning 760lb ft of torque. Having never been on a rolling road, it's difficult to pin an exact figure to it, but it's a lot no matter how you look at it.

Tony:

I like my underpowered Falcon the way it is, I was never after neck-snapping acceleration.  I beefed up the ignition system by replacing the points with an electronic ignition, Accel coil and wires, and I just might slip a Mega-Squirt fuel injection system into the 170.  It won't win any races, but it will get some second looks now and then.

I guess that most of us have a soft spot for our first car. Mine was a Volvo 145s. It looked similar to this one, even down to the "baby poo" brown colour!

Yeah, my fist car was a '59 VW split-windshield bus, the 23 window version with a sun-roof.  I never had to worry about getting a speeding ticket on the highway, the only time I could actually get that thing up to 55MPH was downhill with a tail-wind.

That thing would be worth a serious chunk of change today, but it was probably crushed long ago - I sold it in '76.

I built my first car, but all the bits were production items.

I worked for Pressed Steel at the time and we'd built 5-6 experimental Hillman Imp body shells to improve the air flow to the rear mounted radiator, and once they'd figured out the best one the others were surplus, and as they were fully painted and trimmed I bought one for £100. A showroom Imp at that time was about £650, and I got the engine, transmission, suspension and wheels from Rootes factory in Coventry at knock down prices and assembled the whole thing in one of our umpteen spare garages at the factory. Took me about 4 months of evenings and lunchtimes. :-)

Getting it registered, taxed and insured was a whole different story though..............  :((

Don
Nothing wrong with a relaxed driving car, Don, as long as it's got style and the Falcon surely has a touch of that :-)) I certainly wouldn't be able to handle anything like The Beast. Mind you, it was built in the days of Don Garlits or the Mongoose!

Loved my Spitfire 1500 as well but the demon rust got to it, couldn't afford to rebuild the chassis so bye bye unfortunately.

1972 TR6 purchased from a council estate in Liverpool for £1,050 in April 1977 Laid up in late 1988, restoration began in 2017 but suspended in 2020 due to purchasing 1988 XJS V12 which has required more work than anticipated (there’s a surprise). Hopefully I will restart later this year.

Why did I ever get rid of it  ??????.

My dear old Volvo P 1800ES  1973.. Identical to this one .   Still great condition when I sold it body perfect but the mechanicals in need of some attention . One of the first cars with Bosch fuel injection (mechanical) which unfortunately was a bit buggy. Some owners retrofitted them with carb's .  Having seen what good versions are now selling for  {:-{    only had 16K on the clock..   It now lives out in Spain having found a new owner who has given it the care and attention it deserved
