hi there,

couple of pictures of Bob Kirtley's Flash steam hydro plane Pisces II  -  have a look at the size of the prop at the back end - it is BIG - .

Changing subject, but back to the couplings - Company in China (which I have dealt with before) and they aren't too bad - I haven't touch wood lost anything from them in the post yet.  They do a steel, bone coupling for model boats. Here is a link for it - this may help you.

A dogbone type connector is available closer to home.  I can't vouch for its durability, but as it's metal I imagine it will take a fair amount of power.  It is made for 4mm shafts, but I guess could be drilled out for 5mm.

I'm not sure about very high power but I've used the standard red Huco couplings in large models for many years without any problems. However I always use a double coupling., What a lot of people don't necessarily realise is that a single coupling really allows a little misalignment in one plane only so unless the other plane is perfect you will get vibration. A double coupling allows alignment in both planes which makes a huge difference both to vibration and noise.

However with the power you are looking to apply I suspect the Huco won't be strong enough, single or double.

Cheers

The question has become academic as the model was sold a week ago. The simple truth is that it was too large for my bench and storage area. I will have to set a limit at 3ft/i metre overall length from now on.
