Cheddar Models MK 1 Puffin Boiler
« on: March 09, 2023, 04:27:27 pm »

The Mk 1 Puffin boiler is return flue and whilst mine is equipped with the piezo ignition it has always been a bit problematical so I have moved on to a bendy gas lighter but this is also problematical, some times it just works and other times not!!

The question is, as its return flue can I use a ceramic burner and light it from the top of the funnel as you can with the Puffin Mk 2 boiler as that's not return flue.

I can't light the blowlamp burner outside and slide it in as there just isn't room to do this as the whole installation is enclosed in my Battleship, Canopus 1899. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKLn1Tm8N0w

Its not a serious issue but I just want to know if I can uses a ceramic burner as an option.

Cheers

A check with Gerry at Clevedon might be worthwhile.

Geoff, I will follow with interest, since I have the same boiler (never been used) but have no burner. I would be interested to see your current burner set up and if you decide to replace it, perhaps I could buy it from you to contribute towards the cost of your new burner set up

Pendle Steam Boilers made me a fantastic burner for my Puffin together with an oil separator.   Even sent me a video of the burner on test before dispatching it.

Baldrick would love to see it installed, how do you light it? Does its howl? what size jet and how's the Carbon monoxide (does the exhaust smell nasty)? Sorry to ask so many questions

Bonjour Dave,
On mine, I don't even know if there is a jet number but it smells nothing. I just have to light it through the chemney and there is no problem either:

Nice set up Raphael but that looks like a normal centre flue boiler, here are photos of the return flue boiler I believe Geoff and Baldrick are discussing

Bonjour Dave,
I agree with you, this is not the same type of boiler but I don't know why it wouldn't work through the chemney as soon as you don't inject too much gas at the opening.
I would kindly suggest to contact directly Nigel, very kind man besides this, he would be able to give a credible opinion.

Hy all.

Been trying to get my photos onto the computer but for some reason it is not working. Yes talk to Nigel at Pendle , the burner he supplied me is no problem at all , no noise or smell .  To light it just turn on the gas and after 4/5 seconds put a lighted taper or gas lighter to the chimney top and you will hear a soft "plop" as the flame goes down to the burner. all he will need to know is the type/size of the boiler and perhaps the O/D of the inlet tail (use a digital calliper)

Raphael - you know he makes the best  :-))   I do not know of a finer boiler maker in the UK.

I have several return flue boilers that I light from the stack...key is to not apply too much gas while lighting, have the flame over top of chimney before opening gas valve, and be prepared for the "pop" of the flame going back down to the burner....you don't want extra gas that has spilled out before the flame over chimney catches.

Cliff thank you for the reply, I would be interested to see photos of the return flue boilers to see how and where the various fittings are connected, also if they have steam dryer and or boiler feed water heaters

Bonjour David,

The purpose of this test is to show that it is possible to ignite a double-flow backfire boiler through the chimney. :

Thank you and impressive. One learns something every day - I may give this a try.

Thanks
