Newbie with new build
« on: March 14, 2023, 05:39:10 pm »

Hi all, First off I am new to this boatbuilding lark but I’m now retired and wanted something to do on the long winter evenings so I spent some hard earned on the SLEC police launch as it looked a rather pleasant beast.
I have enclosed a photo and I have to say it’s slightly different to the official pic but I didn’t necessarily want one the same as everyone else!
The question I have is this: I would like to fit a (or 2) blue flashing led(s) and I haven’t a clue what size they should be or how to wire them up for operation from the transmitter!
Any help is appreciated!

Welcome Clive.  Don't worry about the photo, everyone seems to struggle with getting them attached to begin with.

For flashing lights, for a few quid you can have four.  But you want to switch them from your transmitter, so you will either need a servo to flick the switch on and off (very old school) or an electronic switch like this. It plugs into your receiver and if you have a switched channel on your transmitter (that is, one that is operated by a switch, not by the joysticks) then that is the channel to use.  It is connected between the battery and the lights, and you are all set.

Don't worry about asking questions if that still doesn't answer your query.  We all started knowing nothing.  Well, I did anyway.  ok2

Thanks for that Greg, I thought 5mm would be about right but wasn’t sure! I’ll check out the switch too! I did think it would be a little more complicated than just plugging it into the receiver!  ok2

Welcome aboard the forum. Component shop do a variety of switches some of which can be controlled by stick movement. Best of luck fitting your lights. Not a lot of room in there for a switch and resistors. Here's a picture of my effort also a little different.

Thanks for the message, I have been looking at Component shop website so I dare say I will find something there! Either that or I’ll just put fake ones on there!
I have been looking at your other posts following your build! Very nice!
Will post more pics when it’s finished!! 👍

Hi, yes, funnily enough I bought one a few days ago! My battery is 7.2v and this handles 6v so I guess I’ll have to put a resister in??

It's just a suggestion, but you could, depending on availiable space, put your lighting on a separate circuit and use one of these to provide power for it.

4.8V 2600mAh AA NiMH Square RC Battery Pack Vapex (componentshop.co.uk)    or  4.8V 2600mAh AA NiMH Flat RC Battery Pack Vapex (componentshop.co.uk) both of which are re chargeable.

or these which take your own batteries  Battery holder for 4 AA batteries Square (JR lead) (componentshop.co.uk) or Battery holder for 4 AA batteries, side by side with cover and switch (JR Lead) (componentshop.co.uk)

I believe I’ve got it sorted as plugged the beacon in to the receiver and it works fine  :-))
It needs minor tweaks but should be done by the weekend hopefully or early next week time permitting!
I’ll let you know how it goes!

Thank you to all for the advice given! Very much appreciated! Needless to say I’ve learnt loads and it’s given me a great deal of confidence to go out and tackle another!!
