Basic sail sheeting for radio control
« on: August 08, 2023, 05:08:56 pm »

I'm new and planning a 1 metre long RC yacht but a basic question . . and a plea for help

She has a jib, a triangular mainsail and a small triangular sail towards the stern on a small mast

My diagram is the best I can do  ;)  . . not sure if the upload worked !

Loop around servo and driven, idler, return pulley, needs to have a spring in it to keep it taut....

Hi looks OK.  Do not attach any sail sheets to the spring tension side of the sail winch loop.
I have used a pulley giving a 1:2 ratio for controlling a jib.  E.G. the mainsail boom has a sheet attached 10 inches from gooseneck and the jib at 5 inches from it's pivot point.
The exit point for the sheet from the hull should be directly under the attachment point for the boom.  You will need a 'boom vang' as well to prevent the Mainsail from rising up.  This will need a sirong fixing.
For small yachts < 36 inches I use the self contained winch drum.  This does not require a loop and there are just outlets for 2 sail sheets.  Not perfect as it has its own little issues but very good in a small space.  Howes sell them at around £10.

Many many thanks to all
Oh, and the question re the diagram was . . . would this kinda thing work . .
Might buy the radio parts soon and build a test rig of some sort prior to adding all the framework into what seems to be becoming . .  limited hull space.

We do like a challenge eh !

I had good eyes and fingers on my Bluenose build but at 75 (almost 76) . . . we will see !

Bye for now
