Motor advice for 40mm Schottel drive
« on: August 17, 2023, 08:21:16 am »

I am thinking of building a small pusher type tug (LOA about 310mm, beam about 140mm) powered by a single 40mm Schottel drive. Please can anyone advise what motor I should consider for this set up? I do have a spare Mtroniks brushless 1100kV motor if that would be suitable.

Many thanks

Shouldn’t think you’d require more than about 3-4kRPM for that prop diameter.

So about 600kv for a 6v system and half that for a 12v. 1100kv will turn your tug into a speedboat.

Thank you. I will try to avoid the speedboat option!

Does the prop turn at the same rpm as the motor or is there gearing involved in the drive system? haven't had a look at the more modern Schottle drive systems but in the old Graupner drives the prop was geared down from the motor  allowing for larger props.

Good question Jim. I do not know the answer, although I suspect it is geared down. I will try to find out.

Thanks for the comment.
