Paddle Tugs
« on: August 18, 2023, 07:22:09 pm »

Hello All
I'm in the process of what has turned into quite an in depth rebuild of a Graupner Glasgow and have been doing quite a bit of research about the prototype but have got a few questions that as yet I can't answer. Was hoping maybe someone on here could help with the following few questions? I will be posting a build series here but haven't found the time to post it yet.

The name of the kit 'Glasgow' suggests to me it is based on a Clyde paddle tug however as I have links to the area, I fancy going with a Tyne & Wear based name. Are there any characteristics or features that define a Clyde paddle tug vs a Tyne or Wear tug? From the photos I have found they all seem very similar.
I have a lot of experience with prop drive models and the inevitable prop fouling this comes with, am I going to expect the same with a paddle drive or do they tend to be more immune to that? Our lake tends to get mostly bird feathers rather than weed but with a prop, some days can be a never ending battle.
Can anyone give me an idea of how long I can expect the original plastic paddles to last? I've made significant mods to the drive shaft & bearings but so far the paddle wheels are original.

Thanks in advance  :-)) Richard

Is this Sunderland area for the lake or more Newcastle way.

Only asking as so far. I can only find Darlington as a lake. And I am in Hordon .

Hello Richard,

I have a Glasgow model and whilst I cannot comment directly on bird feathers, our lake does have a lot of dead leaves. These can be a problem with props, but I have not had any problems with paddle wheels.
