watch repairs
« on: October 10, 2023, 06:04:09 pm »

Hi, All
Are there any modelers on here with watch repairing interests, after watching plenty of you tube videos i have successfully replaced the quartz movement on my watch, but i have now got my eyes on my late fathers watch which has proper working parts, but to carry out a service i need to have the proper oils to lubricate the pieces as i replace them, but, im now so surprised at the cost of the oils i dont really think its worth a one off job, So my question to any one in the watch repairing field is, is there a more economic way of lubricating the parts.

Hi Trucker

I read your post with interest! My advice would be to proceed with considerable caution. I have had a little experience with watches . My father had some training and I inherited his tools - now over 100 years old! (His career was a heraldic draughtsman and I was a biochemist!)

I'm surprized that you're finding watch oil expensive - Tiny amounts are required, applied with appropriate oiler. Amazon and Ebay sell it quite cheaply. Decent tools are a different matter! Rather than start with your father's watch, I would find less important ones to practice on.

A couple of tips - hairsprings and magnetised tools do not make good bedfellows! When using a watchmaker's eyeglass most people screw up the other eye. It is much more relaxing to leave the other eye open and it doesn't take long to adopt the habit.

Another tip - don't get old! I'm now 83 and my eyesight and dexterity are going down the tubes!

Regards,
Mike

Forget trying to compromise on anything other than genuine watch lubricants and don't blather the works with excess.

Have to agree with Mike, age is a bu**er. Had to stop cleaning and oiling my own twenty years ago. Took my three Seikos to a 'Jewellers' a couple of years ago for cleaning and oiling, a fortnight later I got multitudinous reasons (ALL jokes) why he couldn't do them. Strong odour of Bovine Excreta.

   Regards  Ian.

The chap who repairs clocks and watches (and the occasional model boat!) on Repair Shop has a clock & watch shop in Witney, just down the road from where we live.

Hi All
Thanks for your replies, I'm probably going to be out of my depth on this, so I think I will just add a new strap and
Wear it occasionally, by the way it does still wind up and works, I just had a little confidence fixing my Seiko so thought why not have go, back to the boats then  ok2
