Model plan research format my way of doing things
« on: April 17, 2024, 11:25:44 pm »

Hi Crew this is my way I do my research work on a model after purchasing plans I purchase a spiral bound book normally 300 pages , number each page and then start giving them title's like hull ,frame, keel, fwd 40mm guns ,both tub and gun measurements, etc all the way thru looking at the plan adding extras like tool box location size etc this gives me great reference, any and all downloaded pages I give the page number as my reference point this way I can keep all my reference materials in order adding cross reference numbers as and when required,  I go thru the plans updating information as I go and making it easy to refer to items.I am not a rivet counter just a Researcher enjoying the build , as I go this is my take on how I go about a build,  be interested to know how others go about this as well  .tassie48

I suppose, if I elaborate on that, I stuff everything I can find into a folder on my computer.
Then print out what I need, re-scale the prints for a measurable clarity, then work out a factor of
enlargement for laying out material and cuts. During construction I work around the model using
different photos and views, on the computer, to work out proportions and layout of details.(all the cross referencing here).
At some point it looks like this...  :-))

I, aehm.... I don't...

Buy kit, glue parts, if it floats I've got a new boat... Basically...

Not much more to it...

It's what is IN the boat, driving it, that gets my attention, but for that there ARE no drawings...

I think out of all my models so far I’ve only managed to do something similar once! The Insect class I had some much research in photos, history and plans I completed two folders. However most of my subjects these days appear to be the exact opposite- not because I don’t want to create research folders but due to lack of information. Surprisingly for such a famous ship HMS Glorious didn’t have many pictures or information written about her when she was built in 1916 but loads about her conversion and service post 1924… and of course I want to build her as built!
With the exception of HMS Gnat (insect class) the only other vessel I have huge amounts of info and pictures on his HMS Protector when she was converted into the Antarctic Patrol vessel. I have massive photo albums of her being rebuilt, refitted, in service and I had always hoped all my other projects would have as much information available but I choose rather odd vessels to models!

NickB yes the more different the ship the more I am keen to model them , take the USS BOGUE CVE 9 built in 1/48 scale escort carrier during the research and build period some ten years both one of her original crew a plank owner Ralph Heistand and I talked together longer than the war, they even made me a honored member of Bogues Rogues ex crew members,  I have over four hundred pages of data on her alone, the   IJN Akitsushima seaplane carrier she sported the best camouflage paint job of the whole war I have pages and volumes of data on these two models now its just a humble LCS (L) (3) 52 , model in 1/24 scale  my Kyo Maru 27 Japanese Whale chaser I got the opportunity to board her and travel across Wellington harbor on her once, HMS Dumbarton Castle the Captain was on loan from the RAN and he gave me a cap Tally and a paint chip which is still glued and painted on the model . The Schnellboot S130 is another project work in progress in a large scale .tassie48
