Ballasting big models
« on: May 28, 2024, 07:41:16 pm »

I built the Mountfleet Ben Ain - a big model and a good kit - and ballasted it down to the correct waterline with lead.  This was a mistake!  Better to put in far less lead and complete the ballasting at the lakeside using small plastic water bottles.

A very good observation. Always be aware with big models how much weight your asking yourself to lift. I use 5 and 10 litre bottles and fill them from the lake in my type 45, less weight to transport

It is a well observed truism that the weight of a model boat increases in a direct ratio with the advancing age of its owner.

One moment you have it tucked under your arm as you scamper eagerly to the pondside, the next you find yourself constructing a trolley to pull it behind you.... <:(

I suppose the final stage is when they put you IN the boat and give you a Viking funeral.  %%
