Miss circus circus
« on: May 30, 2024, 09:32:00 am »

Quick question Guys.
I’m currently building the Miss Circus Circus Hydroplane. What I am looking is a website / shop that will give me some advice on running hardware ie flexi shaft , coupling, surface drive , rudder , and a motor with esc that will give a similar performance to the original nitro set up ?
I have emailed two shops with no reply as yet .
This isn’t my normal type build so I do need some idea of what to buy .

Thanks
John

What scale? Won’t be able to say anything without knowing what size the boat is. Built from plan?

Andyn it’s 1/8 scale scratch building from a plan , around 43” long if I remember correctly. There’s a couple of threads on here for the same boat but it’s hardware I’m looking not the hull build ..

Then you’ll be looking along the lines of a Lehner 3040 or alternative at around 56110 size, on 10-14 cell Lipo with a 300A esc. It’ll need a 1/4” drive system with large rudder - probably 6” in length with no setback off the transom. All hardware parts available at Rossisales.com

Andyn that’s great ! Thank you ..
Do you think the staff at that website will point me in the right direction if I drop them an email with what I require ?
Brushless motors I’m familiar enough with as I’ve used then before and you have pointed me in the right direction there , it’s the drive train I’m not familiar with ie sizes and matching rudder to surface drive and shaft ..

Harry at Speedmaster will more than likely give you a recommendation as to which transom hardware to go with, although such things are usually featured on the plans - I’d question any plan that didn’t feature it. You’ll also need a turn fin, I’d recommend looking at the Randy Rap titanium fins.

Motor size will depend on what you want to get out of the boat, but if you’re looking for something equivalent to a 11-15cc glow or petrol that’d usually be fitted in a 1/8 hydro you’ll be needing something over 8 horsepower. Prop will then follow suit.

The plan does suggest places to buy the items but does not specify sizes and I was wanting to source the items in the UK rather than go to the states for them .
I’ll not be racing this in any way but I’d still like it to shift . Plus I’ll be using it in the sea ..
My interest in this boat came from a gentleman I knew built it back in the 1980s but he passed away before it was finished unfortunately. Bought the plan recently and decided to get it started .

Hi

Am I correct in that your using the Sarik plan ?

If it is, I found that you will need to build the Jig as accurate as you can, I did not use the plans shaft method I went down the flexi shaft route.

T888 that is correct . The plans are from Sarik . I made a jig and I have to hull well on .
I’m at the stage now I would like to dry fit the hardware and as mentioned wanted an idea of what and where to buy the item originally would have liked to source the parts in the UK .
I also want to go with the flexi set up seems more appropriate ..

I’d strongly advise going for the Speedmaster hardware rather than Chinese imports. They’re available in the UK from Model Marine Supplies

Hi John,

Coupling photos.

If your using a flexi shaft two things not to forget,

1. Fit a Shaft saver collet
2. Get the correct handed flexi shaft , ie left or right handed for the prop you use.

Further top tip - commercial shaft savers are completely out of balance and can cause your shaft to wear prematurely and break. Fit a short length of water cooling tube on the shaft next to the motor instead, it serves the same purpose without unbalancing the shaft and saves you a fiver in the process  :-))

David / Andy thanks for the tips and advice. I will be taking it all onboard!
I am waiting on the motor mount to arrive now before I can do much more . That said I’ve plenty of rubbing down to do prior to any painting..
I must see if I can upload some pictures from my iPad ..
