IC powerboating
« on: July 31, 2024, 06:36:40 pm »

I am in Stoke-on-Trent. Does anyone know of a club that still operates IC powerboats? The reason I ask is because I accepted a 38" by 12" beam fibreglass powerboat with a Merco 61 exhausting into a tuned pipe last night from someone clearing a deceased parent's home.
Both engine and pipe are water cooled as is the joint between the two. Fixed aluminium trim tabs. Fibreglass 'cabin' to top it off. Showing its age in some respects but the mechanicals all look to be in good condition - but it will need new radio gear.
This is a classic IC powerboat but not something that we can sail on our local waters. The boat cost me nothing so I am quite happy to pass it in to someone who can use it for gratis. PM me if you can point me in the direction of a club that I can pass it on to please. Thank you.

These are sad times as most model boat lakes have now banned all IC, in the London area it is totally banned, and it his spreading. The stevenage club do run IC (bit of a trip for you) In the last couple of years members having been converting to electric, and with the modern set ups its easy to match an IC, but to my mind, not quite the same.......
Hopefully someone will pick up the challenge

Sadly I have to agree with Phil - there's nothing like the sound or thrill of operating an ic model.
Try contacting BMPRS, website online - pre Covid they ran ic powerboat meetings in the northern half of the country,
Sheffield Underbank is one that springs to mind, but little or no activity since Covid to my knowledge.

Thank you for the replies gents. In the interim I found the website for Telford Model Boat Club and contacted them. They still operate IC's so I have found a home for this donated boat. I am meeting their contact, Michael Westhead, tomorrow afternoon in Newport, which is roughly half way for both of us and he'll have the boat. I also have a 'short' wooden Huntsman with an HP 40 'Gold Cup' motor and an SHG Shadow with, I think, an Enya 19 which I built and ran back in the 80's so I may well send both of those in the same direction. Its good to find homes for 'retired' powerboats!
