1/12th Waveney Low top speed
« on: August 31, 2024, 08:44:26 am »

My 1/12th scale Waveney is a bit slow, its an identical kit to a fellow club member roughly the same weight but definitely slower.
My pals boat has twin 800 motors and two of the 50A Perkins speed controllers and 3 bladed brass props.
My boat has twin 850 motors a single 50A speed controller and what look to be identical props yet my pals is clearly quicker.
It make no difference to my boats speed whether its powered by a 12 lead acid or a 3 cell lipo battery.

The 850's are supposed to have an rpm that is 4000 rpm faster than the 800 so it should have more speed given the similarities in all other respects.
I'm only looking for scale speed but I havent quite got it, I have my Atlantic 21 if I want a fast lifeboat, any thoughts?

The 850 is higher reving, but has less torque, so it needs a different propeller to allow it to rev. Try a smaller prop, or one with less pitch. . Personally i would go to brushless, so much easier and simple, but its a personal choice.

but sadly the motors that i thought were 800's which i havent seen in over 18 months were not 800's but an American fast revving motor, so sorry for giving the wrong information

800's rev about 4500rpm with a decent amount of torque, 850's about 9000 rpm and quite power hungry under load.

So fitting two speed controllers as opposed to the one 50a Mtroniks has made a huge difference, boat is now too quick on full throttle, turns on a sixpence with tank steering too.
