A simple question. My boat is mid 1944 spec and I have a query on camouflage. Grey hull except bow below the chine which is white. Decks blue/grey. Can anyone tell me a decent enamel paint to match that deck blue/grey please? I have tried mixing Humbrol 64 with Humbrol 25 but the result is too blue in my eyes. If you can give me some guidance then I’d be grateful. I had a quick look at Colourcoats from Sovereign Hobbies but I didn’t see any Coastal Forces colours, but I might have missed them?

Thank you. Sadly Sovereign Models/Colour Coats have recently released a statement saying that they aren't producing the Colourcoats range any more    Rats!

Sovereign Hobbies still have their research and colour codes and examples on their website despite no longer producing paint. My suggestion is to find the colour on the website, print off a high resolution image of the paint chip and take to a car paint shop. I have one local-ish to me and they can scan the image and mix up in a spray can a batch of paint to match it. I did this with weather work grey as Sovereign Hobbies couldn’t produce enough of it for me to paint one of my models. It wasn’t massively expensive probably about 25% more than a standard Halfords spray can.

Have a search around to see if there are any paint conversion charts which mention RAL codes as these can be mixed to order.

Also, don’t get too hung up on getting the ‘right’ Colour as colour perception varies between individuals and what you see is not necessarily what the person standing next to you does.

Plus, even if you do get the technically correct colour, it will actually look very different depending on the lighting conditions it is viewed under, blue sky, clouds, against the sun, indoor lighting at various colour temperatures etc. It is a moving feast really.

And has it just come out of the paint shop or what day was the photo taken? Water and Sun are great bleaching agents. Wonder if Kirklees specify a RAL or BS shade for their 'Grey day?'
