Hi All


I currently have an Action P64 Steam engine sound unit connected to their P97 Mixer/Amp, which is running from a Mtroniks Viper Marine 15 esc. Everything works as expected on 6V but when I up it to 12v the Sound unit doesn't operate, however if I disconnect the motor from the ESC, the Sound works perfectly.


I've tried different ESC which has no impact.


Does anyone have any ideas what's going on?

To the best of my knowledge the P64a is rated for 4.8V to 6V max.  Take a look at the Component Shop website as the instruction manual for the P64a is available for viewing.

Yeh its 4.8 - 6V from the Receiver BEC circuit, so in theory whether the motor is connected or not it shouldn't make a difference.


just confused why it work fine with the ESC to motor disconnected, but stops as soon as the motor is re connected.

What may be happening is - the circuitry in the sound unit is using a common return on the positive side or the negative.  So, when you connect your speed controller to the unit, it is actually trying to feed it 12 volts.  Try disconnecting the red wire out of the socket of your plug from the speed controller and see if this works.   This should eliminate a 12 volt supply from your battery, because the sound unit is only rated between 4.6 and 6 volts.

The other option would be to supply the sound unit with an independent power supply of 4.8V to 6V.  The BEC connection appears to be the root problem.

So after a bit of fiddling around with different setups, I’ve identified the issue is actually with the P97 amplifier.


If I add in a voltage step down the 12v supply to 11.5v the amp works fine.
