MHB STEAM BOILER AND ENGINE
« on: October 29, 2024, 10:17:15 am »

Whilst I have been sailing steam for many years I have been asked to fit a MHB boiler and engine into a puffer, which brings its own challenges. However I'm unfamiliar with a few items so would appreciate some guidance and input.

Specifically:

- Where do you fill the boiler. With other boilers I always remove the safety valve and fill using that appeture. I see no reason why this would not be satisfactory but want to check

 - With the engine does it require an in line displacement oiler. My other engines all have this but this is not amoungst the parts I have been given. Noting of course there is an oil cup at each end of the engine so does this serve the same purpose, ir lubricating both the valve gear and the bores.

- Which end of the engine is best to take the power to the prop shaft. This may seem a strange question but one end has a small bearing and the other (where the reverse timing is located) has two bearings seerated by the gears which would suggest this would be a stonger end point to take the prop loading.

I'm attaching pictures to assist.

Thank you in anticipation.

Cheers

Completely unfamiliar with the engine and boiler, I cannot comment on the filling issue but cannot help wondering what is underneath that black bulb on the boiler top.

As for the engine, those two cups, to me look like simplified displacement oilers, connected to the valve chests, so should be no issues.

Coupling, without knowing anything about the engine and unrelated to "strength" I would assume the free end of shaft as pictured is intended for fitting a coupling, the other end seeems to be a flywheel.

Thank you for your thoughts which appreciated. I'm also puzzled by the black dome. I suspect its a steam dome as there is also a superheater built into the boiler to make it more efficient. I'm inclined to agree with you the two oilers at each end may suffice but I want to be sure.

The flywheel is a dog connector with two holes so prongs slot in so it can be fitted either end. When I got the engine there was a standard huco coupling fitted to that end so I replaced it. However on thinking about it because of the two in line bearings at the gear end that may be a stonger take of point.

If an intermediate shaft with universals on both end are used, strength does not matter. If those two universals are phased properly, they will combined behave like near equal to a homokinetic coupler.

Both my boats have an intermediate shaft, saves a lot of hassle aligning. Properly dressed up (thin-walled silicone tubing around it, and filled with grease) they are basically maintenance free.

Hello, the black dome is a steam dome.
You fill the boiler either by removing the safety valve or the pug at the water gauge, whatever is more convenient.
This MH&B PB2 engine already has two displacement permanently fitted to each of its two steam chests. You should remove any water with a syringe then fill them with oil before each run.

Hi Geoff,
What are the dimensions of the Puffer,  Length x breadth ?  scale of the boat.?
Any pics ?
George.
