genuine Janes Fighting Ships. Worth??
« on: October 29, 2024, 08:11:57 pm »

I thought perhaps someone may have an idea how much volumes of Janes is worth, a friend who will not see 88 again has volume's from 1931 to mid 1970's. H
e is thinking of selling them, but how and how much, the local auction house is Nesbit's and they will take roughly 23% in commission and vat, an then selling probably to the trade. He has a lifetime collection as well of old photo's of ships etc plus piles of other books related to the RN.

Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, value is in the pocket of the purchaser. How much is your latest floating creation worth?????? And to whom? Sadly, In most cases literally, (bad pun) there is no correlation between historical and monetary value.  <:(

Auctions are tricky.
However, auction houses can plug in to specialist markets. And if something is of special value they can be very good at exploiting it so that they get the best return.  Ultimately it can be pot luck, because of two or three buyers who specialize turn up and they start a bidding war, you can do well. However, this is a perfect storm. Sometimes an lot can be withdrawn and resubmitted to several auctions if there is just not enough interest. Especiallly if you put a reserve on it.
I once got a fantastic 1930s bed for 50p. A the same auction (about 1975) two guys started a bidding war for a length of garden hosepipe that went for 7.50, which was more than a new hose would have cost at the time.
Another option for attracting specialist buyers, often trade, it to put it on Ebay with a reserve.

The other thing to consider, if the photos and  items of memorabilia are personal and related to specific ships, is to gift them to an RN museum. At least you will know that they have gone to a good home.

Some local auctioneers have occasional specialised book sales, it might be worth checking. I know the one in Diss has done this in the past. Be prepared for dissapointing outcome if you have expectations. I recently downsized my military history section by quite a lot and only made about a quarter of the original costs to me. I wasn't concerned about price, I just didn't have the space anymore. E-Bay can be considered, but can sometimes be a long term proposition.
