Access to Mayhem blocked
« on: November 22, 2024, 12:55:08 pm »

Is anyone having problems with Norton blocking Mayhem? I can read the forum but if I try to post it blocks the connection with a Suspicious HTML script message. This is on a W11 PC running Firefox or MS Edge. There is no apparent  way to flag it as an exception on Norton as it only seems to be blocking me sending data rather than accessing Mayhem itself. I have tried clearing the Firefox Mayhem Cookie and cache.

1. Check in a different Browser; Edge, Chrome, FireFox, Opera, Safari etc, etc.

2. Exclude a URL or domain from monitoring - https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v15471442

3. To exclude a URL or domain from Norton's monitoring, you can do the following:
Open Norton's device security product
Click Settings
Click Firewall or Network
Click the Intrusion and Browser Protection tab
Under Intrusion Prevention, click Configure in the App URL Monitoring Exclusions row
Click Add and enter the URL or domain name to exclude

Norton have changed their interface and the above ioptions no longer appear. It is possible to make an exception using an IP address and I have done this for modelboatmayhem.co.uk but the problem seems to be associated with the posting page address.

It is working OK on my iPad which doesn’t have Norton installed.

Open up Norton, go to the "Settings" button, go to "Browser Protection", then select the "Exclusions" tab.  Enter the Mayhem web address.

I've just done that and it worked for me.

Yes well done BB! I've been scouring the new interface looking for that! Still getting some odd warnings but at least it seems to work now.

Colin
I had this problem with AVG a month or so ago, it would access the directory pages but any attempt to load a page was blocked with the warning that Mayhem was a dangerous phishing site. I set the forum up as an exception and it then blocked images from the Mayhem images page and referrals to other websites, again warning of phishing. I had to add these to the exceptions to get full functionality of the forum. This was on my desktop with Windows 10, yet my laptop with Windows 11 and AVG never did this,

It does suggest that there is an issue with the Mayhem website and its imaging facility then.

Might account for the recent apparent drop off in postings?

So what I did then was add:

   www.modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk

to the list of exemptions as well and that seems to have sorted it for now!

I still think there is something wrong with this site or its connections. I did what BB suggested but now, when making a post I get a warning about a site called de.vour.101D

Apparently it tries to make a connection. So is there something lurking within Mayhem and piggybacking on actions taken within the site?

It is a bit worrying.

Exactly describes what myself & scimitarjohn experienced two weeks ago (link) and just before Colin reported  he had no such issues with attaching photos. I tried to reassure John in bold text that he was not alone with the photo-attaching problem and that I found the remedy was to try later or to separate long text from the photos.
I had assumed the intermittent problem was a result of DoS attack on the hosts of the photos rather than an ad-blocking feature. I did a trouble free test post seconds after noon with the same setup so I don't yet see a reason to change my view or list browser, hardware, ad-blocking software.
That information helps & we'll see what transpires.

As mentioned on another thread I've been having problems with seeing images on some threads for weeks which would appear to be those hosted through Mayhem.

I use my Android tablet mainly for visiting forums which does use Norton as part of the licence for it on my PC but on visiting Mayhem and posting I get a warning message at each stage, including for attaching photos directly from my tablet, saying that  Your Connection is not Private etc. As the safety of the site can't be verified due to the certificate being invalid.

Just tried my PC and a warning comes up. Once Norton has done a scan I can access the forum but it won't let me reply to a post. The warning is: We prevented your connection to modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk etc. with the threat being URL:Phishing.

I visit a number of forums without problem apart from one car forum where I was getting the same unsafe warning when first accessing the site but once in can view posts, reply and attach photos without problem whereas with Mahem I get the warnings every step of the way which is a real pain and making it unusable really. Just tried the car forum though and I can access no problem now.

Yes, there does seem to be a problem with Mayhem. My worry is that it could infect my PC.

The photo uploads use ftp transfer, which, from a privacy perspective, is not secure like encrypted https.

Phishing attempts typically use similar urls with spelling differences. So, to my eyes, ChrisF's details of the warning "url:phishing", together with Martin owning both of the domains, shows the Norton ad-blocker hasn't been told.
It's a false alarm.

I  reported problems    Beginning  of October   suggested Avast   throwing False positives  I doubt anyone else using Avast net shield  judging by  the current  state methinks not. I would be wary  turning protection off or making
Exceptions
