DIY spray booth
« on: December 15, 2024, 08:14:00 pm »

Hi, All
Im sure theres plenty of guys that have made their own air brush booths, so im looking for some help with mine. i have put together the booth using plastic corrugated board, its time for the motor, i have a vent motor with all the ducting tube which was once used for my shower steam extraction could this be used in my booth if so can it be wired straight to a wall socket under my work bench missing out the light switch that would normally be seen in the bath room, then the power obtained from another source via a extension lead,

personally i wouldnt do it simply because of the paint fumes and the possibility of sparks from the motor.....spray booth motors are sealed against ingress of paint fumes obviously which are explosive....also any lighting inside the booth MUST be flame proof and explosion proof.....others will say no you will be ok but who would you trust a qualified paint sprayer with over 45yrs experiance in the paint trade.......Lets put it this way to you......if for heavens sake there is a build up of fumes in the booth and shed garage or wherever you are painting in and it goes bang what will your ins say when that explosion is examined forensically by the authorities.THINK WHAT YOU ARE COBLING UP simply not worth the risk buy a proper booth and be safe

odly enough i was talking only yesterday evening about this subject with a good freind of mine who told me of an incident that happened to a friend  of his ..........This chap had decided as his wife was away for the weekend to respray some of his motorbike parts on the kitchen table using Aerosols from a famous car shop so on went the cooker extractioon hood oo doors closed and sealed with tape and away he went everything went swimmingly central heating boiler was in another room so no real problem there as he had been sort of sensible and opened the window to that room.A few hours later his wife arrived home early went into the kitchen through the back door and put on the kitchen light and kaboom spark from the switch ignited the trapped fumes in the kitchen roof one rather furious wife let alone 1x new kitchen roof and walls needed and nearly a new wife !!!!!!!! apparantly he was shocked it blew the roof off but as the fire inspector said 2x aerosls are enough especially in a warm area is enough for disasterous results so please i emplore you all even if using aerosols in a garage make sure the doors are open and no electric equipement as on.....if i am spraying hulls in my garage yes i use lights in there but they are led torches with no heating on at all........This chaps insurance refused to pay the claim so he had to dig deep to pay for new kitchen and even now struggles to have house ins as he is classed as very high risk .And dont simply think that oh all i use is humbrol enamels is safe trust me it is not neither is acrylics .

Do all the warnings of disaster apply when using acrylics? 'Spose a brushless motor would cause a spark too?

If they are water based acrylics and you are using compressed air from a compressor outside the room then there should be no problems. A computer fan should be OK as they are brushless motors with nowhere for a spark to be formed. Spray booths for small scale models are normally just an open ended box with a small brushless fan venting into the room. The light could be an LED strip on 12V powered by a battery, plugged in before starting to spray and not unplugged until the room has been well vented.  Somewhat different if you are using solvent based acrylics such as are normal in spray cans where the propellant may be flammable.

you have to remember it is not necessary the paint but the accelerant, ie CFC's or Butane (as in most aerosols) thats the bit that can go, well boom in a confined space.......it could ruin your day, boat, hair, workshop, and the rest of you week....... O0

These basically are for painting plastic scale mdels and would be used with enamels or water based acrylics. The amount sprayed at any one time will be quite small. Probably using a computer type fan which is brushless so no sparks and a low voltage and low current LED lighting system. If you are really concerned about the lights then using an electronic switch to switch them is a possibility. There are switched BEC systems used in aircraft that use a magnetic switch to power them on and off only needing a battery that can be connected and disconnected when no spraying is taking place. ( capable of 6V at up to 8A output from a 2S or 3S LiPo)

thanks for all your input, im actually quite scared about building this thing now, so much to consider least of all having the thought i might be responsible for blowing up the neighbour hood, ive looked at most of the so called hobby booths but now also wonder about their safety issues, looks like im gonna have to learn to use a brush until the warmer weather then i can spray away in the sunshine.

many thank
