I think some People have used Square Guttering for the Hull. ( not a complete 2 Metre length  O0  ).

Need to be 7" wide for 1/12.
I will need the scale  for the use of
Dolls house fittings and  5 to 6 ft
Is what I would like.
Will look at builders merchants now
Cheers Len

The easiest way Ned is to make a wooden trough from 6mm marine ply to an outside width of 7 inches max, but to be pedantic  6 5/6inches, as all narrow boats were built to a beam of 6' 10", or with belting added on the upper chine of 7'0".

this was so that two narrow boats  or one wide coal boat could use the Grand Union side by side in the wide 14.6' locks and the narrow boats use the standard narrow canals being off shutes of the Grand Union and off shutes such as the Severn and Avon canals.

I spent 22 years playing on narrow boats from the late 70'sd to late 90s including owning a 56' ex hire narrow boat and it was amazing what you saw and what you learned whilst sailing them.

Once you have made the U shaped hull trough then the bow and stern can be made from bread and butter blocks of obeche' and carved and sanded to shape........then just a matter of then repeating the cabin with an upturned trough made from 2mm birch faced ply for the cabin.

That is how I instructed my craft design technology students in high school on how to make them for their GCSE PROJECTS.

FOR the interior cabins and plans which you can enlarge I would get them to get in touch with different boat hire companies for a brochure as to what was on their different lengths of boats............

They are sohhh very simple for a builder to make as 14 -16 year olds with no previous model boat building could easily build one within the school year of a couple of lessens of CDT a week.

good luck and enjoy your build.

AND DON'T worry about the 6mm thickness of the hull as narrow boats were insulated on the inside of 3" of rock wool or similar and then wooden  or plastic or hardboard facing on the interior which would be taken up by your 6mm ply hull.  :-))

Hi Neil,
Thanks for the reply.
I've  been boating on the rivers and canals since
1969 when I had my first boat on the Thames at Reading and the Kennet and Avon was at the bottom of our property.
Last trip was earlier this year Rugby to Banbury in a 65foot narrowboat, so I am aware of the actual boat measurements and different layouts.
I will probably go for a working motorboat such as the fuel boats working today carrying diesel, coal, gas, kindling etc on the major canal routes
I will have a look in the builders merchants to see if there is any square guttering to suit.
Might be a short cut.
Yours Aye
Ned.

Hi Ned - another here who enjoyed boating for most of my life, mainly on rivers and the sea, though I do have a brother and sister with narrowboats .

As a former building surveyor/architectural technician I think you will struggle to find a suitable gutter of the width required and square in section as most if not all are shaped. You could cut one side off a square downpipe but domestic sizes are much smaller than you require.

Hi Chris, I ve looked at the guttering and discarded that avenue.
Had a second thought about scale,
My car just accepts a metre length  yacht fully rigged, so I'm going to make my own hull.
Just reaching out for any ideas from previous  builds.
