What a splendid day at Mayhem 2025.  :-)

We got there late enough to miss the early showers (I think I was still in bed then.....  ok2 ) and while it wasn't bright summery weather there was nothing to complain about weather-wise.

At last I was able to show Dave Milbourn's Huntsman 31 off in public, it's only been seen by the swans on Lydney Lake so far, and it sails superbly, as you'd expect  from one of Dave's boats.

Later on one of the Derby club members was sailing another Huntsman, but in the larger, and ever popular 1/11 scale.

The pair of us held a meeting of the Mayhem Fairey Owners Club in the 'harbour'.  :-)

Another impressively fast boat was a 1937 MTB, HMS Bloodhound, which carried a monster torpedo tube in the centre of the deck with two reloads, handily stored just astern of the tube.

While on the military side it was difficult to miss the splendidly bright between the wars scheme shown by HMS Suffolk, a most impressive model.

A large Tamar Class lifeboat was often afloat on the lake, just in case some of us got into trouble of course.  ok2

Having spent many of my real world boating activities on the Norfolk Broads I was very pleased to see a vast collection of Broads cruisers that had been superbly built by the late Ron Wem, and many of them were for sale.

Here's the Corona, a small 2 berth boat.

But one that really caught my eye was a Brooms Bosun cruiser as I'd hired that exact same boat back in the late 80s, early 90s sometime!

It caught my eye to such an extent that I bought it, and gave it an inaugural voyage around the lake.  :-))

All in all it was a superb day, and we might come back tomorrow, depending on if we wake up in time of course......

Thanks so much for the help at Mayhem 2025
« Reply #77 on: May 25, 2025, 11:08:56 pm »

I'd like to give a HUGE 'Thank You' to the large number of Mayhemers who helped my lady friend Hazel when her electric wheel chair turned right instead of left, and drove itself, and her, into the lake at the end of the afternoon today!

Especial thanks to those wader wearers who went straight into the lake to help lever her and the chair out of the water. There was no way I could have done that, and when I was about to jump in to help her anyway, some wise man held onto my arm and said 'No sense in you both getting soaked when the guys with waders are right here!'

Also thanks to whoever got Hazel the nice hot coffee, which surely helped her greatly. Everyone else was so concerned, which was wonderful.

The First Aiders and the Security lady from the Park management took charge of her and took her to the First Aid post where they warmed her up and got her some dry clothing while I loaded all the soaking wet stuff into the car and followed her up there.

You'll all be pleased to know that they discharged her after she'd warmed up to the approved 36.8 Deg. C and she's now back home, a lot warmer and dryer too.

I'm not quite sure if the wheelchair will survive, NONE of its electrics work at all, but time will tell.

Once again, many MANY thanks.

Hi Kit

So glad Hazel is okay, hope she feels better today after her experience. I’d like to pass on my thanks to all who helped, the amazing people we have on this forum shows the community we have that will help and assist wherever we can always makes me feel brilliant. Pass on our best to Hazel and hopefully it hasn’t put her off coming back next year and I’m sure we will make her most welcome.
If you and Hazel are happy, I’m writing a thank you letter to the park rangers, security personnel, and first responders as they did a magnificent job and deserve praise too.
Kind regards

Got home last night after a fantastic Mayhem Weekend.  Unloaded the car and left everything to be cleaned and stowed away today.  On behalf of the Peterborough Area Model Boat Club, a few words of thanks. Firstly, to Martin and family without whom Model Boat Mayhem would not exist.  I was particularly impressed by Martin’s ability to eat a bacon bap with one hand whilst photographing activities with the other !! All members of the Wicksteed Park Model Boat Club deserve fulsome praise for their work in providing support to Mayhem visitors, from car park management to provision of catering. Klunk and members of the Luton and District Model Boat Club are also thanked for their support throughout the event.  Steam Boat Phil and the straight runners deserve special mention for their entertaining insight to the complexities of straight running. The oldest form of model boat competition kept alive by a dedicated band of enthusiasts and it ain’t as easy as they make it look.  Finally, a huge THANK YOU to Nick Brown who worked tirelessly for months before, and throughout, this year’s Mayhem to make it happen.  Well done Nick your efforts are much appreciated by the Mayhem community.

Hello Nick,

Yes thanks, Hazel is fine this morning, after a VERY long sleep.  :-)

We've re-played her fall in slow motion in our heads numerous times since we got home too, mostly wondering how to stop the blasted wheelchair doing it's 'I want to drive DOWN slopes' thing, without too much success so far.

That'd be a wonderful idea of yours writing that letter, thanks very much, and there's no doubt we'll be back next year either.

Had a chance to recover after the weekend of fun!

I’d like to start by saying thank you for you all supporting the Mayhem at Wicksteed show, without you all we wouldn’t have an event like this.

I’d like to thank Martin, Ruth, and Gina for the fantastic show they have helped to create over the years creating this amazing community.
I want to personally thank Klunk and Steamboat Phil in organising the 16th Mayhem with me and Martin. As we discovered three years ago after the first show post COVID we realised that we need to organise the event and we have learnt so much from it.
I’m extremely grateful to the traders who have supported us over the years and this year being no different from our friends at Dean’s Marine, Palaform, Flag Man, and our new friends at Dorset Print Man. Hope you all had a great time and hope that you will continue to join us in the future.
I want to thank my fellow club members at Wicksteed who provided the car park marshalling, catering and of course all the hard work ensuring the lake was in the fantastic condition as always.
And of course all of the club, individuals, and associations who exhibited and supported the event this year, it was great to see so many of you and it fills me with joy that you had so much fun.
We are already discussing 2026 and hope to see you all there, and of course I’ll catch up with everyone over the year at various shows that I’ll be visiting. :-))

It certainly hasn't put her off, and thanks for the sentiment.

We're only in Finedon so we go to the lake quite a bit, just not going IN it!  %)

I bought Ron's Brooms Bosun Broads cruiser, and it's wonderful!  :-)

As with Dave Milbourn's Huntsman 31 I've driven the real thing. I hired the Bosun for 4 day break on the broads back in the 90s sometime.
