Beamer ( no name yet)
« on: January 22, 2025, 10:05:09 am »

Hi There ,this is the 2nd model on the go  of the 66 inch Beamer .the plans for this are actually drawn by James. A .Pottinger of a 1:35 scale 25.75 inch beamer "Sea-Lady" in the November 2000  Model Boat Magazine . I changed the bow area on it and it was increased to 1:16 scale . The stem ,keel & deadwood area are of Colonial teak  2.4 Kg, the frames are of Beech, also installed some brass dovetail plates.cheers  :-))

I'll certainly follow this one. I know I've still got the free plan hidden away and when it's time to make a start on it I'll be referring to your build - thanks for sharing B.B. :-))

Hi there, This section of photo's all the frames up and installing the stringers they are 12 x 6 mm beech , had to steam the forward section of the stringers as she is fairly beefy there .  Cheers  :-))

Hi there,,I don't think i will be able to get her in the Tuscon ,definitely won't be able to put the hull  in the trolley in the car ??.
With these photo's ,showing the first couple of bulbous bow blocks, I won't be attaching these till I plank her. Ran the garbad planks then started on the ribbing, probably steamed about 85 % of the ribs. Cheers   :-)) ......

Hi there, all ribbed up, with the nose cone I used 3 layers of 1.5 mm ply ( should be strong enough  O0 ) then ran a couple planks around deck level and around her middle , once I got to this stage ,have left it as it is, have gone back onto the shrimp boat build, will finish her off before resuming this build...Cheers.. :-))

Great work. Now I am curious, is the bulbous bow going to be almost flat?

Hi there, I have been a bit slack on posting ,I meant to start re posting months ago, so with this section of photo's mainly planking and blocked and shaped the bulbous bow ( thank heavens for Plasti-Bond :) )  :-))  Cheers .

Thank you Martin. Hi there, with these next section of photo's ,applied a 20 mm thick  Rosewood transom over existing transom, then gave the outside of the hull a coat of wood preserver , then installed the motor beds , then cutting the front holding frame for the motor from spotted gum and showing the pre fitted motor. With the beams across the raise deck looks a bit bodge  ,but I was going to do it a different shape then decided  to stick to the curve.  :-))  cheers......

Hi Dave, at present the hull less all fittings weighs in at just over 20 Kg ,I did put 3 Kg of resin in her (probably should not have, I have it on a table with castor wheels so as can turn it around easily otherwise gets a bit heavy to move)...With the 130 mm prop reshaped took a bit of blade area off, with the main gantries that have to be dismantled for transporting will have the gantry legs sliding into the brass tubing which is well secured through the deck and into blocks inside the hull ( it won't go anywhere :-))  cheers.  :-)

Wow what a fantastic build - just the fact you went to the trouble of jointing the deadwood into the stern post - wow.

A lovely build Brian - If your boats get any bigger I reckon you'll need a crane to get them out of the garage!  Simply amazing!!

Thanks Mark, actually not sure how I will get her in the Tuscon come launch day ?. this section start of the processing room , tested my new Proxon saw out on cutting the 5 x 1.5 mm beach decking strips, after laying the ply over the beams and cutting plenty of cardboard strips ,started on the laying of the Beech deck strips.  :-))  cheers........

Do you need to sand the deck and caulking strips?

Hi Steve, I try to cut the caulking strips slightly smaller than the decking strips (as you know cardboad and sand paper don't mix) I do give the deck a light sand before a coat of wood preserver. With these photo's inside of the bulwarks and cutting in the capping rail around the shoulders, with the curved section I laminated 2 layers of 1mm walnut veneer I purchased back in the early 80's ( and thought I would never probably use ? )  :-)) ...Cheers  :-)

Hi Brian, Another fascinating lesson in boat building ! so interesting to follow, thank you for your posts I learn so much from them -
for instance I think I've recently been caught out with the 'cardboard and sand paper' issue you may be referring too !!

I followed a suggestion on an American website whereby you 'glue black card strips to the edges of the planks' - possibly ok if using seasoned 'dry' timber?
but I'd recently table sawed my strips from a 'new' pine board, and when it came to sanding, ended up with a black dust stained mess - dust sticking in the pores of the unseasoned timber,
the more you sand the worse it gets ! Lol.
Fortunately I only went as far as building a test sample and swapped black card for dark mahogany - 'caulking slightly smaller' noted for future reference thank you, regards Paul.

Hi Paul, yes I got caught the very first time i used the cardboard had it slightly higher than the decking thought this will be easy just skim it off with sharp chisel , some skimmed off nice and neat (if I didn't damage the timber ) still ended up with flayed out edges and seem to get worse trying to sand (never again)...The top section had another coat of wood preserver, then spent about half a day on marking out where the rubbing strips will be attached before they were fitted. The the start on the w-house base which will sit on the aft capping rail and deck, enabling the w-house to be removed.  :-)) ..Cheers  :-) ....
