Schnellboot torpedoes firing system
« on: March 11, 2025, 11:44:27 am »

Hi crew looking for ideas on how to get the torpedoes to fire out of the torpedo tubes ,have the torpedo doors on the Schnellboot working correctly port then std open close , I  looked at a spring loaded solenoid, high speed actuator, even tried a rubber band on a servo release  system from a spear gun  as it is 1/12 scale some room for equipment, air release was a disaster both in cost and ability to fire the torpedo out so if anyone has achieved firing torpedoes keen to learn more tassie48

Hi Tassie, the next issue of model boats, out soon, has an article about fireing torpedoes from an mtb. It should be an interesting read.

Tassie, You might want to look at The SubCommittee website for launching ideas and systems. Also, check out Bob Martin's site. he sells complete systems, here: https://www.rc-submarine.com/

Difference with a sub is that the tubes are always flooded and underwater so torpedo can swim out. Not so easy with tubes above the waterline

MK148 ADCAP GAS TORPEDO: Design, Build, & Test Validation - YouTube

You''re going to have to blow the torpedo out of the tube but you won't be able to scale nature, it's s**t or bust. Full size torps don't swim out, the bubbles give it away.

Bearing in mind  the boats are fast it looks like they just open the tube and stop the boat

as mentioned earlier, there is an article in the latest (April) issue of Model Boats magazine on this although I found it a bit difficult to understand. Apparently the torpedoes are discharged using a spring and air gun trigger mechanism. On the way out of the tube there are magnets which trigger reed switches in the torpedoes to start the miniature torpedo motors running so they can be retrieved from the pondside. It all seems to work but a bit more explanation would have been useful

Tiver21 on his YouTube channel a couple of weeks ago had a video of building working 1/72 scale torpedoes for his 1/72 scale Kilo class RC sub.  He used a small solenoid for his launching system.

"You're gona need a stronger spring." It needs to chuck the torpedo out of the tube, UNLESS you're making a submersible e-boat?

Sorry jaymac, Reddit is yet another link i'm not prepared to use. No matter how many submarine launch systems are shown, a torpedo propeller will never be big enough to 'Bite' enough air to push it out of the tube of a surface vessel and by the same token, a spring or waft of a compressed gas will not have the control to realistically eject a 'slug' of plastic from said tubes. I reiterate, yer can't scale nature'

Hi crew currently working on plan B system A high speed actuator fires the torpedo down the tube a miniature air bottle fires a burst of air to simulate the noise of firing,  the first actuators threw them about 3 .8 meters fwd so I tried a smaller type it was too far so number three I got about 2 meter throw ,the torpedo tube is made of  copper a light Grease of castor oil allows it to both slide and fly still some more trial-and-error work to get it right but pretty happy so far , getting the correct angle is a tad hard , finally got the weight balance to a manageable level the rc in the torpedo is fine both travel and correct line first ones were very wonky lol, trying to simulate the trail of bubbles first attempt was a bath bomb just to bubbly second was a co2 cylinder too short a run ,third attempt is a small air cylinder with servo valve to allow bubbles trail had some laughs with the torpedo missed so I backed up and steered it to the target so wrong but so funny, the rc battery slipped and well it was looking like a total disaster nose up out of the water then nose down trying to bury itself still we learn as we go tassie48
