Books on coastal freighters
« on: July 22, 2025, 03:08:42 am »

Are there and good books on coastal freighters?  Especially in the steam era prior to steam turbines.  Outside of tugs, this is my favorite kind of steam powered vessels. Looking for any books with pictures, first hand accounts of crew working aboard them ect.   Thanks in advance.

There are a couple of books by P. N. Thomas on British Ocean Tramps.
Vol 1:- Builders and Cargoes
Vol 2:- Owners and their ships.
I found both of them available on Amazon.I have his book on British Steam Tugs and it's full of information with many photos and plans.

Laurence Dunn's Merchant Ships of the World 1910-1929 published in 1973 includes a lot of 'short sea' commercial vessels of various types with superb colour illustrations. Lots of general description and technical information too.

Plenty of copies available online at very reasonable prices.

The publishers who published the book "British Steam Tugs" by P.N.Thomas , also did one much in the same style and size of book on British steam coasters.
