Smit Rotterdam motors
« on: April 23, 2025, 11:12:33 am »

Just ordered the Billing Smit Rotterdam kit.  It is twin screw with largish props.  I am not sure on what motors/battery to go for but looking at a pair of MFA 950D geared motors.  Should I go for 2.5:1. or 6:1 gear ratio?  Also I would usually go for a 2s or 3s lipo but would a 12v lead acid battery be better in this application?

If using 12 volts 555 motors direct drive will be fine.

Cheers gents.  Abandoning the geared idea and just go for direct drive.  Will look for high torque low speed brushed motors.

Just a wee follow up.  Ordered a pair of Mabuchi 555 high torque motors and clearly Billings designed the model around this size.  The fit into the motor mount cut outs in the frames straight out of the kit is perfect and alignment with the shafts is pretty much spot on.  I previously built a Billings Nordkap and was impressed with that kit but the Smit Rotterdam so far, is on a different level.
