1/35 Italeri LCM3 rc conversion
« on: April 28, 2025, 09:02:22 am »

I have just finished my conversion of the Italeri/Revell kit and I'm pretty pleased with the end result. There are two 1/35 LCM3 kits on the market one by Trumpeter and one by Italeri and the latter is by far the most accurate one. The Trumpeter model, on the right in these pics, is way too tall.

I intended to build an RN version which is a problem because the RN LCMs didn't have 0.50 cal mgs on the aft deck. Unfortunately Italeri have included the base of the mg mounts in their deck part (purple arrows) so I exchanged the kit deck part for a piece of metal tread plate.

I cut a removable section off the cargo floor for better access :

Prop shafts, 18mm brass props and home made rudders with slightly enlarged blades.

Two brushless drone motors capable of both low and high speeds with plenty of torque :

Some pics made yesterday :

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen ! To answer your question, no there was no roof or cover and usually, at least on USN LCM3s, the door was also deleted :

Some period pics/stills of the RN LCM3 I based my model on. Location Gold Beach Normandy, the vessel belonged to 605 Build Up Flotilla Force G (hence the number 5 on the LCM).

Well-known IWM pics, the number 4 refers to 604 or 654 Build Up Flotilla (don't know which) :

Still of two LCM's belonging to Build Up Flotilla 606 :

Looks like you had lots of room for the motors, whats the physical size of them?

I built the airfix 1/72 scale version and created a crate to hide the battery, I suppose I could have used the sherman in the kit if my kids hadn't mislaid it, very nice truck.

Here are some stills I made from the Ali Express site. These show the size and other specifications :

Some days ago I purchased a 1/35 Combat boat 90/CB90 kit and rc set.  I intend to replace the two brushed motors by these brushless drone motors. Another advantage of these brushless motors is that they don't overheat so you don't need water cooling or cooling fans.
