I didn't know that ....!
« on: July 21, 2025, 11:12:21 am »

As the more stupid facebook/ Instagram / TickToc say:

'I was Today years old when I found out....:'

A cutless bearing, also known as a cutlass bearing, is a type of water-lubricated bearing used in marine applications, particularly for propeller shafts. The name "cutless" comes from its original design, where the bearing was made by cutting grooves into a solid rubber tube, and the name was later adopted as a trademark by Duramax Marine according to Practical Boat Owner and www.followingseas.media. These bearings allow small particles to pass through without damaging the bearing surface, unlike older designs that would be cut by debris.

What nugget of useless information do  you  know?

A term I used for years without knowing the background was:

“Making a pig’s ear of it!”

When I visited HMS Cavalier I was told it was a naval term as the observers/spotters would need to relieve themselves whilst on duty and the design used on the urinals at these lookout positions has lids that look like pig ears! So if they missed, messed up, or worse, that’s making a pig’s ear of it!
