Light restoration of HMS Nubian
« on: August 10, 2025, 10:19:03 pm »

It’s been a while since I started a build log! But this time it’s going to be a little bit different… it’s going to be a light restoration of an old model.
I took on this project after the original restorer unfortunately found they couldn’t do it so I was contacted to carry out a sympathetic rebuild as originally planned. The original builder’s son gave some information on the model and his father; his Dad served onboard HMS Nubian, a tribal class destroyer in the latter years of WW2 of which this model represents with the lattice mast and Bofors guns.
My plans is to seal up the hull and give a waterproof coat of resin and then paint, I’ve taken a drawing of the pennant number and position in preparation for reapplication. I trial sat in the water at Wicksteed Park today with a large 6v SLA and it still wanted to turn turtle! So some serious ballasting will need to take place as the hull looks to be carved from several large lumps of wood!
The entire superstructure is steel and the remains of a mount for a steam plant is evident but long gone. The gearbox driving the two props is in good working order so hopefully it won’t take too long to get her back on the water.

Nick, I think I saw this model many years ago, and with a steam plant which of course was big and heavy so gave the ballast
.Bon courage  ( as we say here) with the restoration a great project

Hi Phil

It’s definitely got some age to it, according to the previous modeller he found splits in the lower hull which we assume was as a result of heat and drying out, John (the other modeller) fibreglassed a repair section over them to prevent them getting worse and to seal up the lower hull but she still leaks from elsewhere.
Spent most of yesterday paint stripping the superstructures and turrets back to steel as the rust was showing through!

Like every Iron and Steel ship ever made. I wonder what the most common tools used on board warships were, probably the chipping hammer and paint brush.
Of course it goes way back in time, one of the gunners regular jobs was to scrape rust off of the iron shot stored in the hold before repainting them.

Most of the paint has been removed, got a few stubborn areas where it’s built up but after tonight’s reapplication I hope that it’ll be ready for a etch primer coat tomorrow evening in preparation for paint scheme application- probably standard admiralty grey and anti-fouling red with black boot top. Main things to build are the Bofors gun barrels and some ship’s boats. The bridge area needs to repair work including the addition of a gun director. It’s not going to get super detailed- just enough to be stand-off and be recognisable as a tribal class destroyer. :-))
