Model Boats (digital) back issues 99p on Pocket Mags
« on: August 23, 2025, 05:25:42 pm »

Not sure why I looked, but I just noticed the entire model boats back catalogue is 99p for digital back issues:
https://pocketmags.com/model-boats-magazine/issues

Just picked up a few with the Fairey build articles, and some with builds that I was interested in reading up on.

I know digital copies not for everyone, but if you have an iPad/tablet I don't find it that much different to reading a magazine.
(any flyers, RCME also the same).

That's interesting, I wonder what is going on?

Did you get the latest one as well, albeit at full price?

I've been subscribed to the print edition for the past year or two, so I read your Fairey article Chris this month which was great, I had all the relevant notes for me already saved away from your various threads here and elsewhere but really good reference to have.

Just ordered the 1/12th Huntress kit from Sarik this weekend, I bought the plan 2 years back but got lazy and ordered the laser cut kit and wood pack now the river police boat I am building for a family member is getting there.

I tend to renew for 6 months which at Christmas and mid-summer seems to cost about £20 for 6 issues on "the offers" which is acceptable to me, I like the non-screen expereince as I spend to long on the screen at work, plus some of the plans are good to have. These niche magazines won't last if those that can afford it don't subscribe to keep them afloat.

Just looked at the link, the back issues are actually £5.99 each, not 99p.

I wondered if it was related to the change of ownership? I certainly would not pay £6 for a digital back issue, maybe they are trying new approach of higher volume at lower price?

Sorry Jim it looks like the offer was for the bank holiday weekend then, everything but the current issues and certain specials (like the Vic Smeed one) were 99p when I posted the link.

If you are buying a plan from Sarik then it is generally very useful to get hold of the accompanying build/information article that was originally published with it. You can get these in varying formats depending on how old the plan is. For more recent years you can get digital copies which I think are £3.99 from Pocketmags. For before the digital age you can search for actual secondhand copies from Magazine Exchange and EBay etc.

There is also a source called Vintage Model Plans in Canada which sells copies (full size reproductions) of a lot of the very old plans and who usually include a photocopy of the original article.

Thanks Colin, I am going for the 1/12th Huntress plan MB2131, I bought the plan about 2 years ago when I ordered from Sarik an original plan for Vic Smeeds Lorraine, after finding Mayhem forum to research the boat I have had since a child gifted from a relative in the 80's.

The full writeup for Dave M's Huntress is in the Winter Special 2017, I "found" a copy as PDF on the internet a few years back but with the 99p offer on back issues at PocketMags I bought a legit copy for a clearer conscience on Saturday. The article is really comprehensive so while not such a simple build for someone starting out building boats everything is pretty clear. I now have the back issues with the Huntsman and Swordsman in as well as a further point of reference.

I also bought a plan for the Smeed RTTL, Dec 58 model maker article on the internet but in those days you were expected to know how to read the plan.. (started a thread an RTTL here https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,71086.msg769982.html)

Thanks for your comment, having pretty much all the information to hand from my own research I thought it would be a pity if I didn't use and offer it as a reference.

Good to hear you are building a 1:12 Huntress which is one of my favourite models. The hardest part as with most builds is fitting the hull skins but apart from that it's pretty straightforward with you building upside down off the deck. I found it beneficial to glue some small timbers to the deck to locate the frames and provide more gluing area.

Most of the builds I've seen are the bigger 34"/scale 1:8 with SLEC offering it as a full kit. Will be good to see your build on the smaller one which is a nice size.
