RC Submarine rescue buoy
« on: October 06, 2025, 01:48:45 am »

Long shot......

Anyone remember an article in Model Boats or Marine modelling magazines, about RC Submarine rescue buoy ?
....probably from the 1970's or even earlier?

The idea consist of a cork, tethered to fishing line ( disguised at a hatch, or-the-like ) & held down / glued to a tablet ( Aspirin, etc. )
that slowly dissolve and releases the cork after some time, indicating where the sub went down.

( I'm having an 'discussion' with some wag on Utube,  that think he's just invented it! )

That's all right, Mr Ryan. My Morse is so rusty, I could be sending him dimensions on Playmate of the Month.

If anyone saw Antiques Roadshow yesterday, the timer used in some limpet mines was an aniseed ball %%

I recall reading about a sub-sea research project many years ago where the cameras on the frame were fired at semi-random periods by springs which were held up by a cord tied through a Polo mint. Apparently fhey dissolved and released the springs at an ideal rate...

Recently, a gentleman (sorry forgot his name) posted on another site that he uses water soluble filament (used in FDM 3D printing) to be the timer and Bob Martin did a test and the filament dissolved in 3 hours for him.

If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

We tested the PVA filament at the latest subregatta.  we tried it twice.  it took a little over 2 hours for it to dissolve in the water at our location.  It was very consistent in the time it took to dissolve, about 10 seconds apart in both tests.

Think this needs a full test on various products like your glue challenge Martin  :-)

Now He's a character, for a 'professional' model submarine builder, he has an awful Lot of failures!   %)
