MB22 and boiler to suit
« on: August 28, 2025, 09:01:15 pm »

Hello, I've been planning on building a large clyde puffer. Around 44" long. I would like it to be steam powered and after a lot of searching, have come across Malcolm Beaks MB22, along with four possible boiler designs. I have read that the MB22 punches above its weight, so should be ample power for a pottering puffer. After further research I've found Malcolms reversing gear also. The gears have been ordered today, and will arrive in a weeks time from a well known auction site. I figured with the engine and boiler built, I'm at least half way there to finishing, and it's smaller to store than a 44" hull. Also means I can build the hull to fit the mechanical bits.

I have read that Malcolm made some ammendments to his original design, which would be handy to have. I would be very greatful if anyone who knows Malcolm could pass on my enquiry, or if anyone has been sent the engine upgrades please may I have a copy.

One addition that I can think of is to add an engine driven pump and bypass.

Hi JonIt's been a long time since I designed the MB22 and the memory is getting a bit tired! There have been a few mods intended to make the construction rather simpler. Are you in the UK? If so perhaps you could give me a ring on 01923 672341 as I would like to talk to you before getting into the details of construction etc. I also think that the engine could do with being a little larger - there are mods for that as well. I am rather tied up this weekend, but would be very happy to talk with you next week.
Looking forward to hearing from you.  Malcolm

Hello Malcolm, sorry I've been on night shift this last week, (last minute change), and my son and partner took part in the great north run over last weekend.
I'll give you a call this weekend.

Thanks again.
